@ DR - the exact same fanbase?

NO - Life Cried, The Panic Lift, Terrorfakt, FGFC820 had a much different crowd then say Clan of Xymox and APOP

Same thing with HUG and deadstar assembly - much different crowd - they could have maybe gone a bit more risky but as I understand it this is their first go at a festival like this.

I hope they do have a second one and they learned a lot from this one and mistakes are rectified in part 2

dr chop's got a good point. i was thinking along the same lines. you know, say in mera luna, you get tool, or some j-rock band, etc. etc. it works out quite well for the turn out i think.

wow im flattered some of you guys think VF is some big corporate juggernaut that can do whatever we want.
anyway, thanks to everyone that came out to triton festival, it was a great time.
just to clear up a few misconceptions:
VF is not a huge corporation making tons of money, quite the contrary. Yes we are the biggest industrial music website and we throw big clubnights / events, and have a store in nyc. Of all the things we do, really the only 'profitable' venture is the website.
The VF store has been open for 2 years now and has yet to make any profit.
More than 50% of our events lose money, including Triton Festival. Complaining about the ticket price and making it seem like we're doing it all for the money really is kinda sad.
As any industrial scene promoter will tell you, there is no money in the industrial scene.
Yes we did pick some local bands to keep expenses down, but we still had to pay all flight and hotel expenses for 16 of the bands to come to NYC just for this festival. I could go on about all the expenses and work put into the festival but its simply not worth my time trying to prove a point to someone who simply doesnt have a clue.

"Yes we did pick some local bands to keep expenses down"

And that's definately not a bad thing.
There is a lot of good talent in New York!

I've only heard good things about the fest. I hope it provided a little jolt to the scene there in New York. That place definately needs it.

  5. This is my first time posting on the forum here, but since I attended the festival I wanted to chime in.

I didn’t want to start out negatively, because I had fun and think the Festival did well for its first year, but there were a couple things I’d like to see different if there is ever another one. One being the DJs, which perhaps the promoter doesn’t have a ton of control over, but I would have liked to hear a greater variety of musical styles representative of the bands playing there. I mean, yes there was EBM and powernoise, but there was also some goth, rock, etc. I assumed the DJs would take the opportunity of the festival to spin a more eclectic mix of songs instead of half hour after half hour of the same dance beat. But then, I may just be a naive upstate-dweller.

And as much as it pains me to admit it, since I'm a slowly developing new artist myself, it wouldn't have bothered me as an attendee if a couple of the lesser known acts were dropped in favor of a shorter program. My girl and I were worn out by the time most of the last bands went on. We actually opted to come late two of the days because we wanted to party and dance but knew we’d wear ourselves out if we went non-stop from 5 or 6 til nearly 4am. (Judging by the bodies asleep on the venue floor, I don’t think we were alone in that sentiment)

I think it’s pretty obvious the venue has to go, both to us and the promoters, so I won’t even get into that.

All in all, it was nice to have another alternative since, for me, Kinetik has always fallen on a week when I’ve been busy with something else. I hadn’t been to a festival since the last Blacksun, so I was happy about this. And it wasn’t really that pricey either, for us it broke down to $40 a night…and we saved tons of money by refusing to buy the overpriced drinks. Met some cool people, met some of the bands I’ve spoken with online but hadn’t seen in person yet, and saw a few friends play as well. I hope they do it again next year (as long as it isn’t that venue).

It’s often a losing deal for a promoter, that’s a lesson I’ve learned from experience, so I choose to be supportive when I can. I hope they can grow it into something bigger.

@standardissue the first 2 nights you could leave and come back so it wasn't like you were stranded there but on the 3rd night after 9 no re-entry which did suck.

Jet already stated they would not be using that venue again, so there was some learning at this, hopefully they do have a second one and we get some different bands (not that I had a problem with any of them for the most part they were great but traveling 10 hrs needs to be worth it and not just a replay of the year before)

I don't remember seeing ink dot boy, northborne or september mourning, I either arrived late or they didn't show...

  7. I believe Ink dot and september mourning didn't make it as they weren't on the final schedule. I think I missed Northborne as well.

And definitely some different bands next time, if there is another one, I agree. Most of the bands on this festival I had seen 2 or 3 times already, but I wanted to see the couple that were new to me and see some familiar faces as well. It's tough balancing out what people want to see, whether that's new faces or familiar faces.

so I posted way back on page 1 of this thread about my plans to attempt to do a "mini-festival" next March in chicago....well things are coming together quickly and sounds like it may be a go as I have confirmations from 17 out of the (now) 18 bands. Plans are still to go with $15 a day or $40 for a 3 day pass. I have attempted to keep the band numbers small each day so that people aren't worn out (now looking at 6-7-5 for the number of bands each day) and to have each night end by midnite and then have 3 crazy afterparties (probably with members of Acumen Nation/dj Acucrack, Die Warzau, and Cyanotic dj'ing at them). Lineup is shaping up to be pretty diverse with EBM, Terrorbanana, goth, synthpop, cold wave, rock/pop, ethereal and even ending the festival with a Acoustic headlining set by Chris Connelly (Ministry, revco, finitribe, pigface etc etc). As mentioned earlier about 5-7 bands will be from the illinois/Wisconsin area to help keep the costs down with the rest now coming from out of state.....but more on this very soon
