Tips for Ambient Pads

  1. another trick for some pulse width modulation like sound but without square wavs is to set 2 oscillators to saw with the same tuning.. no detune.

then do slight FM modulation on 1 of the saw wavs with a sine or tri LFO.

i believe the phase cancelation ends up chopping part of the saw wav off and it'll sound similar and look similar to a pulse wav if using an osciloscope.

might have some different results from just using a pwm'd square

I forgot to mention that I did that pad on a subtractive synth, more specifically the Roland SH-201.

I know by now that subtractive synthesis is not the best for ambient pads but anyway... I tweaked things around and that pad became this

Probably still cold and n00b but anyway...I'll keep trying.

  3. I still don't exactly know what terms such as "warmth", "cold" or "glassy" mean because I'm a n00b.

Think of warm as a full rich sound and cold as a thinner more synthetic sound. Glassy is usually reserved for more bell-like pads made with sine or triangle waves.

generally the more the pad sounds organic, means the less you hear an obvious repetitive pattern, the more athmosphere it creates...I personally would use FM Synthesis for this and play around with the modulation destinations...
another hint would be routing different LFO's to different parameters...a lot of programs of people I saw only used one or two LFO for mostly cutoff/resonance....

with the envelopes you can finetune a sound and even add more "life" to it...

if you use arturia products they offer a so called galaxy module...this allows you to create ultracomplex filtering and stuff...

and the origin also offers a parametrical envelope...I can add keyframes with defined settings and let then the envelope morph towards these....

    creates incredibly complex patterns..

  5. haha.. DoDD.. that actually does sound much warmer.

imagine the sound in your head.. is it yellow, orange, red or a shade/combination of those? then its warm. if its blue, green, purple or a shade/combination of those then its probably colder sounding.

thats just how i describe them.. so i could have it completely wrong to.. but its sound and i hear what i hear.. fuck the experts

i think the sh-201 is great for pads. you can split and layer the keyboard. its multitimbral, it has 4 LFO's. try making a supersaw based patch in the lower register to play with the left hand.. so you can basically hold a key or keys down with the left hand for longer periods while the patch your created for higher registers (try a pwm'd based patch) can be faded in and out with long smooth attack and decay setting on both filter and amp envelopes.

also.. try setting the filter envelope's attack a bit shorter than the amp envelopes.. it'll help bring out some of the other frequencies that aren't as readily noticeable.

@DRA-Funz: is it good? It is really expensive and no demo available......

  8. i just bought a microwave xt.

being shipped from the land down under

this thing will be epic for pads. i can't wait

Omnisphere is awesome. You can do whatever you want with that synth.

  10. omnisphere does sound pretty badass... my first impressionj of its sound was "epic and huge"

its just next to impossible for me to get into software when it comes to programming synths. there is so much resolution in a potentiometer... turning a virtual knob with a mouse simple can't cut it. i love computers but for some odd reason the computer and i haven't gelled when it comes to programming synthesizers.

If we're talking about analog-like sounding pads my advise is arturia cs-80. it has some cool knobs to turn or automate

  12. For what it is worth, I tend to layer 2 or 3 synths to get my pads the way I want them. Typically I use the impOSCar, the MS2000, the Virus B, or various Reaktor synths [subharmonic, junatik, or equinox] Also the Togu Juno emulator.

  13. "WHat tips can you guys give to create atmospheric pads like those used by Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno?"

A Virus TI or an Alesis A6 has some pretty sick atmospheric pads...

Even an older Roland XP-50 or XP-80 will do nicely as well...

Interesting. I almost bought the Virus TI Snow but I'm still undecided.

I don't know what the hype is about them and I can't find anywhere if they use subtractive or FM synthesis

  15. VA, Subtractive, PD, FM and Wavetable(Ti) synthesis

the hype is put some headphones on and start pushing keys down on all 700 patches... that did it for me...
