My girlfriend wants to get one, and, as I'm completely unable to build anything, it seems like I'll have to find one somewhere on the internet. Anyone got an idea where I can find a not-too-expensive theremin ? Basically, she wants it to produce noise rather than melodies, as part of a "theatric" performance, so I guess the box doesn't need to be very technological...

...my wife wanted one, i bought her the etherwave kit, although it is rather simpler to build than the paia's theremin, it would still be complicated for a beginner.
now look, there are several types of theremins, and since your gf wants to noise, they are all ok, and i wouldn't even look at the two antenna theremins (one is for pitch, the other is for volume), let me try to explain, theremins naturally have very thin voice, so if you want to use it to create droning soundscapes, you would need some effects (delay and reverb sound amazing on the theremin, chorus fattens the one osc sound pretty well), so you can get her either the one antenna theremin (pitch only) OR some kind of theremin influenced instrument, like the alesis airSynth, or alesis airFX (discontinued, and from what i get...pricey), there are other boutique noise makers with light dependant resistors which act similarly to the theremin, but they are also pricey for what they are (usually a glorified atari punk console with LD resistors instead of pots), there is also the thingamagoop (analog synth, limited, yet fun from what i've seen)
so i would recommend you to keep things simple, get her some of these (i don't know much about each of those, just did a quick search):

and get her some old guitar or half rack multi FX processor
this would give her the flexibility to play the thing with one hand, and use the other to wiggle the FX pots, and then, you can score additional points with your gf, because one of these one antenna thingies outed U2's edge as a tool

offlineMemberI have a cheap theremin I got off E-bay. Its not bad especially when put through some pedals. Not as good as the custom built dub siren I have though.
