    thx for posting your way to get these kick :) it still depends on the song and all other musical influences to the Sound but a good walkthrou how you did it. lot of info for me

    @Tumor: the Problem imho in your track is not the kick....the rest of the arrangement is so overlayered that you have a lot of phase-dirt in it...imho there then are side-band effects at around 250Hz which cut away the melodic amount of your kick..

    several hints here:
    (difficulty increases from hint to hint)
    - kill the high arp *g*....this becomes really bothering imho after some minutes (well but will not fix the mix *G*)

    - try to pan out the phase problem...you have pretty some saw-based stuff with a lot of harmonics...panning is an easy way to correct this....take one track, and start panning it from right to left or otherway round....at some points you will hear the sound "narrowen" and at others "widen"....this is due to phase extinction or addition...play around with the tracks to meet your best config...
    as a basic rule (remember this is just for the dry signals! routing these through subgroups,FX-Channels or such can change this...:

    Kick - MONO! and always Pan Center
    Snare - MONO also center
    Bass - I like Monobasses better than stereo-ones...for me they have more punch and precision in a mix...but depending on your preferences you can also use a stereo-one...if you don't use any phasing FX or a lot of Distortion in it, try also to have it center...
    now pan the rest around in the mix...but be aware only use SLIGHT amounts....a good example for me how NOT to do it, is NamNamBulu's Alone where they panned out the vocals too far from center, giving you a very confusing stereo-image imho...

    - use Compressors to add a depth structure to the song...

    - do the same but with a combination from compressors and EQ

    - again use Comp/EQ but also use Reverbs to build your room..

    - only use EQ and Reverbs...this is the least destructive method and keeps a maximum of the dynamic of a track...but also needs some decent monitors and a good bunch of experience...my sound-eng for instance really avoids to use any compression in the mix to fix any phase irregularities or so....he mostly uses a parametric EQ and the Reverb amount we send to our 5000 Systems....slight corrections in the final mix before going through the multiband compression he makes with a stereo EQ (NSEQ2)

    i create my kicks by getting about 5 samples (kick or otherwise) and cross fading them to get the different section of the kick. i get a sample of kick from an old rock song for the immediate attack and make it quite trebled so it cuts through, and fade that out very very quickly to bassy 909, maybe even low passed. then i'll put a kick i quite like underneath that, and mix the three to pleasing effect. then i might add more sections like a tail from more samples, effect what i've got with EQ on each and compression on the whole. maybe some like flavoursome overdrive. then i record that to cassette and record it back in, layer them on top of each other then balance the clean and the cassette copy for pleasing effect. EQ the reulting sound, maybe giving it a bass boost for a good thump or a treble boost for good attack, and then decide where to fade the kick out.

    if you cut the cassette bit, that might help you design an original kick that will give you a personal sound.

    @yade, thanks for your tips i allready got a new version of the song. and mixed it nearly the best "I" can. how wan i find or hear the phase problem? dont know much about that phase things. i allways pan things like u say. all the time.

    well the phasing you can detect if one track sounds full when soloed but in combination with others starts to "weaken"....this is then because the addition of each waves will zero themselfs out

    with all that said about layering tons of kicks, I find that sometimes less is more.. I never use more than one kick at a time and totally go by what Yade said, its your arrangement around the kick that will weaken everything.. I always mix the bass line / kick / snare first and everything else around that..

  9. its neat cuz the way modulate describes how to create a kick is sorta how i mic to get a kick sound. Dead on behind the beater to get the snap, and then another off to the right, listening for phase issues to roll in to get the thump. Speaking of phase, i recorded with the adat at practice last week. NICE, lol. nothing beats when out of phas drum mics make the drums dissapear like houdini, lol. TG4C thank gawd for computers. " click-click " phase reversal.
