i have yet to hear any positive news on windows 7 audio drivers.
vista was craptacular on my laptop when i attempted to run it with my Xstation. since installing XP i have had no issues.

any news on weather m$ has solved Vista audio issues in win7?

i'd check with the manufacturers & make sure their drivers specifically support your OS.

  3. For $400 bucks you could get something really nice like a M-Audio ProFire 610. Also N.I. has 64-bit drivers dialed for the AK1 now so I've heard. Presonus makes some quite inexpensive units as well in USB and Firewire...

I've heard very good things about the Saffires, build quality, preamps etc. On my shopping list.

Thanks for the reply but I will try to be more specific

I already have a full daw based on xp, works A1.

Now I am buying a laptop for work that will require windows 7, so I was thinking trying to install my music programs on it to see how the os will handle music applications, because of the vista nigthmare stories. I dont trust product specifications, I want opinions on actual experience with these OS.

I would like recommendations on people that have had personnal succes with vista or 7, or their input at least, not people pointing out soundcards or compagnies they know cause I know all of them pretty well.

Thanks and sorry if I was not specific enough in my first post.

Hmm...updated my XP Machine to Win7 with the RME Cards and drivers...no problem...also my NI Audio 8 DJ and the Korg Zero8 had no problem with Win 7 (on a MAcbook Pro 15)
NI Audio Kontrol 1 also did not produce any issues....

I think that Win7 is much more stable and better performing that Vista was....so I would rather see that your laptop has enough RAM (>2Gb) and a fast Harddisk (SSD preferred) that you can enjoy the low latencies modern interfaces offer....also I'd ensure that the manufacturer offers up to date (means Win7 compatible) drivers...the rest is imho personal preference and budget....

I'd personally would avoid M-Audio, Behringer and Presonus...imho they "flatten" the sound due to poor A/D conversion...but as said this is personal preference...

Not specific enough, that's nothing like the question you posted! :)

And nope, I run XP on my laptop which is currently waiting to be replaced so can't help there I'm afraid.

I Just waiting for stable drivers grrrr.

and Like Yade says, avoid M-Audio, Behringer and Presonus!

Go RME, I know this is not in your budget but this really good!

If you get the firebox make sure your laptop has Texas Instrument firewire chipset or it will be super buggy.
