  1. So Ive been out of the loop on new horror stuff but a remake of The Thing is scheduled October 13 or something of this year. I cant believe they are doing a remake of this. The 1980s remake is one of the best horror movies ever. EVER! Just watched it again last night even.

I checked out the new remake at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0905372/ but has anyone actually seen the trailers? I cant watch em here at work.

    What next? A Nightbreed 2012 remake? :/

It's a prequel based in the Norwegian camp isn't it?

    Yeah. It's a prequel, not a remake.

Still, it seems pretty unnecessary. Is anything different going to happen? The scenario will be exactly the same so I imagine it'll play out similarly. And will it just end with a dog running away? Climactic finale a-go-go.

It being a prequel has pushed me in the direction of seeing it.

Looks like a remake to me. It doesn't even seem scary either after having seen the original so many times. Plus there's no beating the acting chops of Kurt Russell and Sir Diabeetus.

  10. The Thing really scared me as a kid. I must have been 7 or 8, and that scene in the beginning in the holding cell where it begins to mutate from the malamute (new band name I call it) terrified me beyond all comprehension. it was one of the only R rated movies I was allowed to watch before I was 11 cause my dad liked it so much (after I watched The Matrix 5 times in a row every day for 2 weeks, I started watching whatever I wanted, even snuck into Dracula 2000 with my brother and his girlfriend. lol maybe that's not brag-worthy ;p).

with memories like these, I'm looking forward to this prequel movie but with some trepidation. also, there's still a ginormous fanbase for The Thing (seriously, I was astonished) that probably feels the same way.

you might want to look at this list of upcoming reboots and remakes. sure most would probably be terrible, but some of them could be awesome, like Spawn and Videodrome, among others (which is another movie that scared the good holy bejesus out of me as a kid).

    The Thing(82) was a remake.

Technically this new film is a prequel to the 82 remake from what I understand.

Here's an article comparing the two films(though I don't think the reviewer saw the 2011 version. I will judge for myself.

  12. I'll give it a shot. I like that actress and I always wondered exactly what happened at the Swedish outpost. Hey Sweden!

"They're not Swedish, goddamn it, they're Norwegian." lol

It cannot ever make up for the first remake. Carpenter is an amazing director. Still I think there is ground in the storyline that can be explored. I know they were working on a sequel for a long time. Maybe this will be the spark to get that to happen as well.

  13. "So it’s not a remake, but we get the bearded helicopter pilot, the bad ass black dude, and the goofy looking radio operator."

-these three characters are in all kinds of films. Check ALIEN. Check PLATOON, APOCALYPSE NOW, the list goes on. I'm sure it is some Hollywood prerequisite for character development. He does have a point that things are very similar.

I have tried to watch the original several times and I always fall asleep because all they do is yap and nothing ever happens.

I think the the 1982 film is more of a reboot than a remake. It's certainly way better imho.

it's both prequel and remake is what I've heard -- it's technically about the Norwegians, and yet they've made them basically go through the same events as the 82 film, and cast them to be basically the same, etc.... I agree, that makes no fucking sense. the trailer, however, seems to back this notion up very clearly.

  16. ^that does make sense. they'd be able to bank on virtually the same story that worked before, without touching the characters in The Thing.

Much like any Aliens movie that comes out(as bad as it may be) I will be sure to check it out. Here's hoping it's halfway decent.

Apparently there is also a Total Recall remake in the works. It's refreshing to see that Hollywood is so full of original and imaginative ideas (shit) these days.

I just came back from seeing the prequel. It's definitely not a remake.

This is not a spoiler if you have seen the 82 movie, but everyone but one person is pretty much fucked and it's fun to see how it happens. Only 2 things I didn't like about the movie. One of them is the CGIness they added to the creature and the other is something extraordinary that happens at the end which I won't spoil.

The suspenseful edge made up for it's shortcomings. It was actually made to compliment and tribute John Carpenter from the few subtle lense flare shots to title sequence and commitment to the ending which ties both films together.

It was not the greatest but much better than a remake!

  20. Nice! I cannot wait to see it :D Maybe Sunday.

How was the soundtrack? Stark and creepy like the original, or did they do something different?
