Serious forum feedback

(43 posts)

  1. Ok, since I don't see any threads about suggestions/feedback etc. here's one from me:

    Cons:
There are, what 30 posts or threads per page? The forum overview could do with longer pages, and you might want to get rid of paging entirely on the thread views. Forcing people to change pages usually burdens the server more than not putting a limit on the SQL query anyway... In other words, like the old forums. (1000 post limit is almost the same as no paging :P)

Video embedding, but no image embedding? I think it should be allowed. With a simple style property (max-width), it's possible to limit the size of the hat brim, if that's what's worrying you. I think the lack of pictures makes the forum dull, and one thing I always liked about SL was the light spirit.

    Pros:
I REALLY like the layout. It's one of the simplest forums I visit, looks serious and it's really easy to get an overview. I like the subtle avatars, spacing, font sizes, etc.
Metropolis Forums could learn from this. ;)

Also, I think it should be possible to mark your text with bold and italic. Not more than that, though. I like how the layout is otherwise forced simple.

it goes without saying that i agree with Mr Sumez

you've done a bang up job Side-Line worker drones, but the lack of pages and the pictures are some features i loved most.

What about the classic S/L threads (Old School, Neo-old School,Minimal Electro & Synthpop threads)? They contain valuable info for new & veteran electroheads alike.

those threads were a gold mine. many google searches would find references to those threads and bring people to side-line who may have never heard of side-line.

  6. Absolutely agree with EAR and Tsarik.

  7. Regarding the older threads, it is imposible to import them here. However, there are plans to have the old forum available to cruise through. This might happen faster than you think :)

The new forum looks excellent. I totally agree with Sumez on all points, though.

One minor thing that would make my life easier is to make the link to the forum thread list available both on top AND bottom of the page.

A strong upgrade to the conversational model here would be a reply button to the individual responses to an initial post. Limit posters to a single reply to the top level comment, then allow unlimited responses to each reply.

  12. I like to keep forum threads clean, and not go further into multithreading. It's hard to keep track of new comments, and get a flow in the thread.
At most, a simple "quote" function would be useful, but not absolutely necessary IMO.

Example of a quoted text (using both em and blockquote tags)

  13. @ Sumez:

how did you managed to get this effect? It looks typical quote function... 4 which we all crave for...

    Agree 100% with sumez!

Only thing I could add, would be change green for orange and this will be teh best forum in the universe.

Also, on members profiles, a message funcion, like the old one.

    Like this:
    <blockquote><em>Hi there, this is a quote</em></blockquote>

Or you can just use blockquote, and not em, if you don't care about italics.

  16. Oh I forgot one important one, one of the reasons I made this thread:

I think it's really annoying that it only shows HOW LONG AGO the last post was made, and not the time. Meaning the next time you refresh the forum page, you don't know how far back to check for new posts.

  19. If we could embed images I would post this:

And then how many people would get the pun?

Yes, please enable pic posting. And please make it so that when i click a link on here it opens up in a new window. I was writing a reply and clicked a link to check something and lost my whole post. That sucked majorly.
