I think if a Remix is done properly it surely adds some value to a compilation....but I agree to Tekslave that a lot of the remixes nowadays are pretty shitty and also imho rather uninspired...take the midi and 80% of the samples of the original, add 2 vanguards and a virus track and off you go....
what I also see is that the remixer's name often is more important than the remix itself...when known act XXX makes a remix, and unknown act YYY another one with (ok my personal taste here) much more creativity and craftsmanship (meaning properly mixed etc)..when it comes to reviews you mostly only read about how nice XXX made the thing...somewhat sad I think..
another point from the point of the artist is, that imho a lot of remix kits provided are of a terrible quality...I for instance stopped to do a remix for anyone sending me MP3s of the vocals and sample tracks...(and this happens sadly a lot)...
and it also starts to some point piss me off, if I have to first clean the vocal tracks of hiss and noise, normalize them to have equal levels between the verses or gate away delay and reverb FX people put onto them even if you explicitly asked for the clean vocals...when I have to tweak around the vocals and fit them to the original tempo etc for say 4-5 hours, in relation to around 15-20hours of total work...I do sometimes know why more professional acts than me do not do this any more or ask money for it..
