  1. I read that the new Salem album has a lot of remastered older material. Maybe that is why that other clip sounds like shit?

    Dirt sounds much better.

    The music starts about a minute in. Very David Lynch inspired video..heh

  2. Then I found some reading material on "Drag", and how it came about. Anybody have more info?

    yeah, we had a drag/witch house thread a while back.

    The big labels are Disaro and Tri-Angle and they do heaps of CD-Rs and cassettes. The guy who runs Disaro also runs the blog www.20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk/wordpress/

    I'm surprised S-Lers and more on the pulse with this.

    @Michael
    King Night hasn't been previously released, so I don't think its old. People just need to understand that their stuff is willfully mixed and mastered in a lo-fi way. They described the album as being "impossibly heavy" a while back, if it's relevant.

  4. @Ornox-read the Wiki- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem_(US_band)

    Previously released material + remastered older but unreleased material.

    Also this is not a debut album if they have a previous full length from 2008 "Fuckt".

    I am not downplaying the release, I like some tracks, some others not so much. But I want to get all the facts. I really like "Dirt", I may have to track down the LP or EP that is on. "Redlights", is pretty cool too.

    I just can't get into Salem. I can't really understand why, outside of the "pushing the envelope" or simple hype context, they're very popular at all. Hell, even the NY times wrote an article about them. ( http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/07/arts/music/07salem.html ).

    In that same article, Gatekeeper is mentioned. I think Gatekeeper is much better but I saw them live a few months back and much was left to be desired. The smoke machine was the best part of the show. That being said, I can't wait to see them again tomorrow night and hope the band puts on more of a show itself.

    Of all the bands discussed above, I think White Car has got to be the best. Their sound is heavily reminiscent of mid period Cabaret Voltaire (and i suspect their name is from the cabs track off of Code. Some of their tunes are catchy as hell and get stuck in my head for days . . .

    I'm surprised no one has mentioned ///tense/// in this conversation. For those interested in the bands above, check em out . . .

    //tense// is pretty good. A good example of the sort of old-school sound that I sincerely hope makes some kind of mainstream comeback in the near future.

    Surprised to see The New York Times did an article on Salem, much less one that was so well-written. Their take on Salem's work is pretty damn accurate imo.

    @soillodge
    is this not their debut? I'm surprised. They're only a young band, i think they formed in 2008.

  9. @Ornox-there was an album on "Disaro Records", in 2008 which I cannot find any info about [http://www.myspace.com/ffdisaro] but the album "FuCKT" is easy to find [the downloads, I cannot find an actual CD]. It is very raw and creepy, like that track "Dirt", I enjoy. Maybe it was considered a self-release and that is why this new album is being toted as the debut.

    if it was on Disaro it was probably a CD-R release. Maybe its not considered cannon, or maybe it just went under the radar.

    Does someone know if the Salem CD is going to be available in Europe? Where can I find Gatekeeper releases? This sounds much more indusctrial than the onzz onzz stuff is being release these days.

    I'm starting to come round to Salem. The drum sounds remain a problem, but the Youtube clip of 'dirt' reminds me of "3rd From The Sun" era Chrome, so it has its appeal.

    There are copies of the cd version on Discogs, so maybe just the vinyl is delayed.

    One of the sale items on ebay is the UK version which appears to be distributed by Sony. That came as a surprise...

    i just got the LP

    i think there are a couple of tracks that Side-Liners may enjoy. Especially Frost, and the title track if you can deal with digital clipping.

  16. Augh, not this shit again. I've followed this "Witch House" thing since it was big on 4chan's /mu/ board and Salem is probably the worst act out of that whole "scene". I can't believe they're actually getting any attention over acts like ooOOOoo or Ritualzzz (Who I haven't heard from since this thing blew up, unfortunately.)

    Well, if Salem are distributed by Sony, while most of the other bands are on Disaro, it shouldn't be too hard to believe.

    i'd rather form my opinions based on an LP than a 4channer

    sorry

  19. @Ornox: Witch House pretty much started on 4chan, and Salem are blowing up because of Pitchfork, who have made it obvious that they are frequent visitors of the music board there. So if you're going to dismiss my opinion for visiting a certain website, than you may as well dismiss the band based on their origins. Quit being silly.

    4chan sucks and so does Pitchfork

    i like the band Salem. I don't care how they became popular.
