  1. so i've been researching DAWS.

i wanted a lean, mean, and simple DAW since I'm just starting out.

from my research i think Reaper may be the one for me. I am impressed with them as a company as well... 30 day free trial where everything works 100% and zero invasive copy protection which usually only hurts legitimate owners. and the price is damn nice @ $60. I definitely get a good feeling when buying products from companies that care about their customer's opinions.

I've downloaded the trial and am about to install it.

anyone else use reaper? what are your thoughts on it?

i'm kinda interested in ableton since there seems to be a ton of tutorials available.. makes me think the creators are really driven to help people use their product... but its pretty fucking expensive and i really don't need a bunch of bells and whistles...

I just want to be able to record, sequence external synths, and possibly a sampler so i can make my own percussion samples and then use them in my computer

  2. I have heard good things about Reaper. I know some bands in our scene that use it. Choosing a DAW is always difficult because it has to form a partnership with your own work flow needs. I played with many different production systems before settling on Cubase. And now I even dislike Cubase 5, I still use SX3. My only suggestion is to try out a few of them and see what fits you best. Ableton is very attractive to me because of the new Max for Live abilities. I have a new laptop with win 7 so I am going through the trial version now to see if I can get used to it. It seems like a lot of these newer systems are about creating a live atmosphere and spur of the moment music. I have always been into to excessively complex arrangements and compositions so these new progs really give me a turn. Sequel is another one to check out a trial on. Really clean interface, logical creation tools, amazing possibilities. http://www.sequel-music.net/en/see-it-hear-it.html You may also want to check out Reason. Very different workflow interface.

Reaper is the ideal sequencer for people who are just getting into
music production, nothing beats it imo.. and you have nothing to
lose because they offer it free. Good choice.

I'm currently using it on my laptop and Cubase 5 as my main DAW host.

  5. I'm using Reaper as my main DAW just now. It's lean, easy-to-use, the workflow is really nice, and compared to Logic, that I was using before, my CPU usage is cut in half. The interface has a few quirks I'm not massively fond of, but nothing major.
It's dirt cheap, more stable than any other DAW I've ever used, the audio engine is lovely, it's got a really active community, and the developers listen closely to user input.

Also, its lead developer is the guy who developed Winamp and screwed AOL/Time Warner out of millions of dollars ;)

Basically I can't sing the praises of Reaper high enough. It just fucking rocks.

I use reaper as my main DAW. Migrated from Cubase. its incredibly fast, small and the most stable I've ever come across. I do a fair bit of live recording (26 channels) and its the only thing I'd trust to do it without any stability issues. As mentioned, the community is great, and I love the development model/business model. I've done a couple of albums and a few EP's in it, and although it took half an album to get used to it, I couldn't go anywhere else now as its so insanely customisable to individual workflows with custom menu/macro/extension stuff. Love it.

  7. Purchased Reaper.

No more new shit for a long time for me. Have too many pieces that I don't know how to fully utilize so I'm going to concentrate on integrating all the new elements.
