PUNISH YOURSELF vs SONIC AREA “phenomedia” (2009)

1-obedience channel (part1)
2-twisted thrill ride
3-tragic hollywood hero
4-I had orders
5-powercut
6-cancer anyone ?
7-the higher you fly...
8-ici bas
9-there's no way out but down
10-obedience channel (part2)
11-Wacko (season 2)
12-dead idols island

Remember about the old “United we stand, divided we fall” slogan ? Punish Yourself (“Cult Movie”, “Pink Panther Party”…) and Sonic Area (“Insensé”, “Explore”) probably had this in mind when they decided to join forces on a common record. “Phenomedia” is not a classic split-album, or a collection of mutual remixes, but a full fusion of both musical universes - resulting in completely exclusive tracks, going far ahead of anything you would expect. Influenced by Hint, Download, Clint Mansell, Foetus, Coil or The Downward Spiral, but mostly by the hypnotic power of mass media, Arco (Sonic Area’s mastermind) and vx “cheerleader” (PY singer and programmer) tried to break all stylistic boundaries and restrictions, in a merciless attempt to decipher the “Real World” or at least give some aural image of his morbid complexity. Dense, nervous, sometimes hard to describe, “Phenomedia” mixes cinematic orchestral atmospheres, dirty hip-hop, tribal industrial techno-punk, brutal wall of sounds, hard-glitch breaks and lush ambient soundscapes – and if you think it’s too much, you’re probably right ! This is a shamelessly noisy freaks parade announcing the “Nightmare Before Apocalypse” : acid bass lines, explicit TV sampling, screaming saxophones, broken drum machines collapsing into moody organic percussions, melancholic piano arpeggios and cello, distorted blues guitar, suicide lullabies, whispers, incantations, rants… This is hard cut-up music for chaos lovers, topped with broken bits of post-industrial mythology – the Roswell Alien, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley, Hakim Bey, Nikola Tesla, Jim Jones, Timothy Leary, JF Kennedy and many more unwilling guests. Do you feel like you’re part of a media-traumatized generation ? Do you feel addicted to the continuous stroboscopic flow of information, entertainment, spiritual promises and advertisement delivered by TV, the internet, movies, radio ? Is channel/net-surfing/scanning/hopping your favourite killing-time drug ? Do you feel like nothing is good enough, real enough, awesome enough for you ? How can you spend more than twenty seconds of your precious attention span if this record is just another product of the music industry ? Who’s the next scapegoat ? Who’s the next star ? Who’s the next Guru ? Who’s the next Prophet ? What’s the next distraction ? What’s the next thrill ? What’s the next reason to believe in something ? Should you buy a new laptop ? What should you fight for? Money ? Power ? Disorder ?
Put the remote down and try Phenomedia. Welcome to one of the most innovative, esoteric, poetic and pessimistic cyberpunk album ever recorded !!!

NOTE : 12 pages Booklet’s childlike unpretentious artwork was inspired by Naïve and Psychiatric art, German Expressionism, Surrealism, Droste effect, Tim Burton, grotesque eye-catching TV shows visuals and all phantasmagoric theme park ride.

3. If you liked the tracks on Peacemakers Inc, I suggest you check the album we released in October on Seasons Of Mist, it's called Pink Panther Party and it contains studio versions of Zmeya, Shiva Only Is God & Legion - the "phenomedia" record is a kind of side-project, a collaboration with Sonic Area

5. I'm a huge fan of Punish Yourself! I've been waiting for a new release for ages. Cult Movie was great stuff, but left me hungering for a new release with the classic PY sound.

I actually saw the Peacemakers split at Maschinenfest and thought "Whoa, Punish Yourself AND Ambassador 21? Awesome!", but I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure what it would be like - split EPs often tend to be quite bland stuff.

I saw you guys play at WGT in 2005, and I'm a little sad that I haven't had the chance to see another gig since... Let me know if you care to be hooked up with some promoters in Denmark ;)

6. I hadn't even heard of Pink Panther Party, I need to track that one down.

edit: I can't find it anywhere :( Isn't it out in CD form? Searching for it only results in illegal downloads which I don't want!

7. It's a completely "normal" cd, released by Season Of Mist. You can find it here : http://e-shop.season-of-mist.com/en/catalog/list?search_type=text&page=1&sort=true&search[simple]=pink+panther&commit=OK (I think it can be downloaded officialy on amazon.fr or amazon.de too). And well, it's somewhat a big return to the "classic PY sound", even tho rawer...

And yeah I hope we get to Denmark sometime !!! If you have any interesting contact, I'm eager for it !

8. Rawer is good! :)
Thanks for the link, I'm ordering instantly.

edit: I love a webshop that says "thanks for the money" after completing an order

Do you think PPP is their best album, Sumez?

I like most of what I've heard from Punish Yourself. And their live shows....WOW. Like every LSD trip I've had combined with that gang that Robin fought in one of the Schumacher movies...can't remember which one, but it was the only good thing about that movie.

13. No, I think Sexplosive Locomotive is their best, at least when it comes to variation, but I really love Disco Flesh: Warp 99 too because of a few brilliant tracks.
I haven't heard PPP enough to see how it measures up compared to the others, and since I have a girlfriend staying at my place nowadays, it's difficult to find the time.

14. "from the inside", I think our best record is the free downloadable live we released on d-trash records, "Behind The City Lights" : http://www.lunaticfringe.org/~schizoid/dtrashrecords/digitaldownloads/044.html . And I tend to think the "Cult Movie" instrumental record, though questionably punish-esque, was an interesting effort. But it's difficult for an artist to judge his own work...

Posted 2 years ago #
15. I love Cult Movie, but I can't compare it to the rest, it stands on its own.
