I'm thinking of picking this one up for my distorion needs. Any members out there who've used it? Opinions and suggestion for alternatives(software only for now) are welcome!

  2. I have it but I never use it. I always find myself gravitating back to PredetOHM or the quad FrOHMage for distortion and wave-folding. I think the older effects have a more intuitive GUI and are less processor laden. I can layer more instances of them than just running one OHMicide.

Have you tried NI Guitar Rig at all? I was put off originally because of the title, but kAfA convinced me to experiment with vocals and synths through it, I was very surprised it is so versatile.

Another great VST distortion workhorse for me is the D16 effects http://www.d16.pl/index.php?menu=2
Redoptor, Decimort, and Devastor may sound like terrible 1980's Decepticon names, but they are brilliant for mangling the fuck out of sounds.

Michael, thanks for the suggestions! Are the others you mentioned AU compatible?

I have Guitar Rig as part of my komplete pack but haven't bothered with it to be honest.

you can try kombinat from ad, it is somewhat nice, but a bit generic multi-band distortion, as most ad stuff it is a bit stinky, or you could try the izotope trash (i always found it weak, but someone here told me that it is weak because of amp simulations, which should be turned off).
my favourite one is waldorf d-pole, it is a filter and a distortion and several other things (and it comes bundled with the attack drumsynth and a ppg wave emulation) it is a great thing, when i started using it i forgot all other distortions

  5. @M4RC-No prob! Yes, all the ones I mentioned also have AU versions.

  6. Ohmicide is an incredible piece of software, but it's not a plug-in-and-turn-on kind of thing. If you want detailed intense and evolving distortion, it's great. Otherwise, it's probably not the right tool for the job.

the sound of the ohmforce plugs is cool...but the fucking handling....Ohmboys regularily makes me cry.....why can't one not design a proper UI? I mean Synplant is also fancy but still offers a "99% of the world would work like this" approach...or do I miss something here?

  8. Yeah man, you are missing something because every one of their progs has a "classic" skin GUI if you cannot figure out the arty logic.

  9. I dig Ohmicide a lot.
Other than the saturation plug in Ableton (which I use sparingly, from time to time in my custom ableton racks), Ohmicide is the only 'distortion' plugin I use.
It can be much more then that though. It DOES take a bit of getting used to. Once you get going with the patch morphing, multiband dynamic processing, and feedback options, it can become more of an instrument than just a distortion box.
Its great for comming up with glitchy noises (using the 'freeze' distortion algo, which basically does wacky random buffer shit).
One thing that helped me make ohmicide more useful was to set up for 3 or 4 'starting point' presets. One for broadband subtle saturation (the 'Valve' algo works awesome for this). One for multiband enhancement. One for broadband distortion, and one for Multiband distortion. It makes things a lot quicker.

Also, running Ohmicide in High Quality / Oversampled mode does wonders with how far you can push the plugin and maintain tonality before it just breaks off in to noise (but you can do that if you want... oh yes... you can). This takes the CPU usage up quite a bit though, if that's an issue.

I can't say enough good things about this plugin really...

@soillodge: oh...then I have to figure out how to check the arty UI back again :-)

I think it's an amazing piece of kit...my go to distortion. It is very deep and you can do a lot with it, but at the price of speed of use. It does have a lot of presets but there are so many parameters and so many algorithms you can lose days tweeking it. But you can get some awesome sounds from it from subtle to really whacked out.

I use Ohmicide on vocal track! a lot of possibility ! i really like the 4 noise gate ,one for each band ! killer ! and not really expensive !

  13. I've used Guitar Rig a lot..
On the other hand I also used the one mentioned here before, from D16..

Whatever suits best.. But running synths & beats through Guitar Rig (provided you play around with the setup etc..) is something you should try!
