  3. Heh, is it already out? I met David at a Black Lung gig last year and he was saying that this would be "the Snog album that nobody will like"

Yeah, I have it too but I've only listened to it once. I used to be really into Thrussell.

Musically it's not bad. It's not my usual cup of tea but it is different as Snog always is. The vocals are a bit too murky in the final mix-down but otherwise I think it's well recorded. I think the music is somewhat boring but I do really like the first track a lot.

However, I think the lyrics are pretty lame. He's not saying anything we haven't heard him say, and he's said it more convincingly. It seems like Snog is reaching for the niche fan who already likes Snog and believes everything the lyrics say.

This brings me to a point of contention. It used to be (at least it seemed this way in the past) that Snog was an attempt get a music audience to think. Progressively, the albums seem to be preaching to the converted. I'm kind of disappointed by this fact.

For all Thrussell's skepticism and cynicism, I think he goes a little too far sometimes. Cosmic Caveman seems to indicate a fear of Science. I might be wrong about this but give it a listen tell I'm wrong; please convince me he's not saying science is bad in that song. I thought Snog was partially about poking a satirical finger at non-science believing conservative types; science is the best thing we have to understand the nature of the world. Again, I hope I have diagnosed this song wrongly. I want to think Thrussell is just being satirical and that I'm not getting it.

All in all I really like Snog and Thrussell's message/agenda in general but I draw the line at some points; as all critical thinkers should.

I think it's the best album since 'Beyond the Valley of the proles'. It's unique, eclectic mix of genres, melodic and dark. 'Big Black Hole' is one of the best songs Thrussell ever wrote.

Ok maybe I was too hard on the lyrics to Cosmic Caveman; it isn't directly saying that science is bad but I still sense a negative sentiment about science.

"The Fires" is a great tune.

Why do I like his side projects better. Like, a new 'Soma' would get me tingly all over.

Well it would be cool if he had something to say about sucky science policies :)

But no, as mr. divider says, being skeptical of science in general isn't a good kind of skepticism :)

He's singing about materialistic philosophy, that really we don't know anything, only what we're told. He doesn't criticize science at all, only lack of spirituality probably, and that it will bring new dark age, if science continues to be misused. That's my interpretation, anyhow.

I hope that's what he's getting at through this tune. I'm still not entirely convinced. It's easy to interpret his lyrics as anti-science. I'm not saying he is anti-science. I have noticed that a large group of Snog fans are just paranoid conspiracy advocates. Even though there is virtue in skepticism, you have to be mindful of poorly reasoned theories. The fact that the Snog myspace page is littered with hokey conspiracy friend pages doesn't help to deter my interpretation of "Cosmic Caveman" as anti-science. Sorry if I harp on this subject. The philosophy of science and justification of scientific claims was something I studied in grad school. All in all, Snog is just music and I can appreciate that.

On mutilple listens, I really do like the album. "Black Hole", "We're all in this Together", and "Fires" stick out to me. I still have a difficult time getting into Cosmic Caveman because of the anti-science sentiment. Even so, "Cosmic Caveman" is a pretty cool track.

I think the album has a nice flow. I can easily listen to it from beginning to end without wanting to skip a track.

On a side note: I hear a lot of prog-rock influence here. It sounds like Pink Floyd meets Neil Young. Somehow this album is not only musically mellow (compared to other Snog releases) but is also lyrically mellow. If you take the aggression out of Snog it starts to turn into hippy music. This album kind of gives me that impression. Strangely, when Thrussell starts to put out a positive message (with the first and last songs) the song ends up reminding me of recent VNV Nation (you know, alternative rock-positive-U2-let's get together-anthems).

    Just my opinion.

I don't really get an anti-science vibe per se from that song.

More like without an ethical underpinning, science can lead humanity down dark paths if we don't watch out (e.g. eugenics).

Ok, good, it's just my mis-interpretation due to a first few listens. The more I listen the more I like the album. The first song reminds me of 21st Century Boy; it's almost the same chord progression.
