  1. "bigger distribution"

does Metro do this effectively still? I haven't seen a Metro release in a major retailer's stores in YEARS.

I'm interested in new Shiv-R, their EP was quite good for dancefloor music.

  4. I think what's missing here a bit is an understanding of how many different things go into making records and making music available. It's not just promotion and distribution, and even those things are multi-faceted and time-consuming. There's no such thing as a small business that doesn't spend all their time doing one million tasks.
I cannot speak for all parts of Metro's promotion, but I don't think it makes sense to talk about something so multi-faceted as promotion with a blanket statement. Maybe they're amazing at radio promotion but suck at club promotion, for example (just a random example, means nothing).
When Metro has a new release, they get us the information (either thru their website, their distributor, or direct via email) instantly. If we email Shannon to get a barcode # or larger cover art, the reply comes within HOURS. Any other label (with the exception actually of Alfa Matrix: kudos to them) takes either one day, or two days, or weeks, or never reply unless we essentially beg them for the info. This really makes a difference, as any online shop will attest to.
I think it's more useful and accurate to talk about different tasks and what is done well and what is not done well. Some of these things are internal to companies so we'll never know, but there are a million things Metro does right visibly, and for that matter a million things many labels in this scene do right.

Metropolis is kind of off my radar too, as far as checking out new bands goes. Seeing the Metropolis brand on an album these days isn't a guarantee of anything.

I still see Metropolis CDs in stores sometimes, so I'll give them credit for that.

I am 100% happy with what Metropolis has done with my Electronic Saviors Compilation. They got it into Best Buys and Hot Topics and it is selling very well. I am so honored to have something like this reach as many as it did and I couldn't have done it without them.

Seein Metropolis never meant absolute musical quality anyway... they released hundreds of albums, some of them are obviously going to be better than the others...

As a client on the other hand, I have no problem, they keep releasing domestically at a fair price some stuff from europe, they always deliver in terms of professional packaging or digital distro (since they joined Emusic anyway), and they've always been professional when I dealt with their distro. Also I like the fact that they are promoting bands like Electric Six, which I might not have heard about otherwise.
