I'll let everyone know when I get my copy. I somehow doubt I'll get one (in the US) on the release date but we'll see.

Today, Friday 12 March, Binalog Frequency is transmitting ONLY Hard Rhythmic Electronics!

"Violently Alive", the new, long awaited album by the pioneers of electronic music Portion Control, is out, and there's no better chance than this one to pay a tribute to the group. This station, from its launch back in 07, is broadcasting, in a weekly basis, the whole back catalogue of PC. Today, from 06.00 to Saturday 06.00 (GMT + 2 Greece), every PC release, from the very first (the "Surface And Be Seen 12''-1982, In Phaze Records) to the latest (the "Crop" 2xCD-2009, Sigsaly Transmissions) and, of course, the whole new album, will be on air at least once! So, while you're waiting anxiously for your "VA" copy (what? you didn't ordered one yet?! run here: http://www.portion-control.net/shop.html and get it), tune in to BF to enjoy 24hours of the finest uncompromising electronic music from the last 30 years!

"Portion Control are one of the most influential and copied harder edged electronic bands in the world. They have been honored and name checked by the likes of Depeche Mode, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, NiN & Orbital. Formed in London in 1979 they have produced a stream of critically acclaimed releases. 2006 saw the release of "Archive", a boxed collection of 5 CD's that included all the Portion vinyl. Now they forge on unfettered by typical genre thinking, continuing to deliver a unique, innovative, updated and relevant sound that is theirs alone"

Got mine today, with 4 cards and 4 badges and 2 extra download tracks. Album is pure (new)old school industrial heaven. 'Relapse' sounds like an instant all time classic.

I've given it a few plays now. Not too keen on the first track 'Icon', which has a pretty generic synth sound running throughout (the first minute or so I found a bit worrying before the vocals kicked in), but after that it's all good.

'Blood Loss' reminded me a little of 'Death On The Installment Plan' era Numb, and 'Addiction Rising' reminded me of the club mix of 'Poison' by Hula, which is no bad thing.

  15. I got mine yesterday.

Honestly, my first impression was a bit of a disappointment. It's a good album, but not what I was hoping for.
And it's definitely an EBM album, there's no arguing that (but knowing Side-Line, there probably will be anyway). It's very ubbeat and aggressive, and a lot simpler than their previous outputs since their comeback.

What I've come to love Portion Control for since their "Wellcome" release is interesting and atmospheric, progressive soundscapes, a well produced and detailed sound, that varies throughout the entire album, never repeating itself, and giving a solid album experience that demands to be heard from one end to the other.
And while I must admit that the few "upbeat" tracks from their latest releases had me wanting a lot more of those, I think Violently Alive is drowning in them. A lot of the tracks are too alike, as well as repetitive in their own right, meaning several of them end up seeming sort of redundant. Of course, that's what you'd normally expect from an EBM album, but I've come to expect more from Portion Control.

I agree with raedarius that the opening track is clearly the weakest. It's a poor start for the album, that had me thinking "Wtf, did I accidently put on a Suicide Commando CD?". Keep in mind, I really like SC too, but that's his sound, and I have no idea what it's doing in Portion Control's musical universe. They just don't mix - in my world, PC is so much more than just an EBM band, but the new album does nothing to show it.

Of course, it's in no way a bad album, but with an album like "Wellcome" in the same band's recent history, Violently Alive sort of pales in comparison.

But that's just a first impression from a single listen. I'm going to listen to it again when I get home and hopefully it'll be better when I know what to expect. If it's like any other PC release, it will grow better over time, and maybe I will come to love it eventually.

Damn, I'm getting peeved that I still don't have it! Anyone else (in Southern California) get their copy?

I think I'm really going to like it from what people have been saying. I liked Wellcome but I want something more EBM right now.
