My setup right now is Behringer xenyx 1002 mixer and M-Audio Fasttrack USB.
I've been quite satisfied with this setup, but now i'm thinking it's time for a little update.

I need a mixer with more line inputs (at least 6), no need for preamps. My xenyx mixer has only 4 line inputs (and one is needed for fx send) and 2 preamp inputs. also atleast one fx send is needed and i would LOVE to have solo switches.

Also i propably need a new interface. i think that a basic two line inputs for stereo signal would be just fine for me. i don't have any experiences of multi channel interfaces..

So please, can you give some advice so my money wouldn't go down the drain.

  2. get 2 birds stoned

Allen & Heath ZED mixers. they're mixer's that have a USB for recording audio into the computer or routing audio out of the computer and into the mixer for sending to FX devices and back into the PC

    lots of sends, inserts, channels.

I have a ZED14. sounds like a ZED10 without onboard FX would fit the bill for you

i'm completely satisfied with my mixer, it has made recording much more enjoyable

  3. I agree with Tsarik. Nothing I could say would tell you anything new, really.

Except that I have a Mackie Onyx and I know they make those in audio interface form. Just another option, really.

@tsarik hey, i was looking at those zeds, how are you satisfied with it? it is supposed to have nice preamps and good eqs??? is it usable via usb?

  5. Ehh, I'm taking it that Zed-14 doesn't have discrete per-channel I/O over USB... why the hell is it so difficult to do multichannel audio over USB? And if USB is so crappy for audio (which it is), then why is it so widely adopted? Surely it's not that much of a hassle for everyone to adopt Firewire - I mean even my shitty Windows laptop has a Firewire port.

Eitherway, that Zed R-16 looks soooooo frickin' tasty. If I had a spare grand and a half, I'd be sorely tempted to blow it all on that bad-lad!

i'm interested in the ADAT model since that protocol has served me well & i've got a card i like that supports it. just curious about how the routing works with submixing various channels on the board to which ever ADAT channels. anybody messed with that model?

Wow those Zed mixers look seriously cool! That R10 seems very nice, but again 4 preamp inputs.. i just need line ins. but i gotta take some serious look on those mixers.

    @Rogue
ZED-R16 is firewire and seems to have multichannel recording. 16 channels are just way too much for me.

    ah

:::there are no facilities for mixing or controlling the additional ADAT channels using the desk, so that's something that must take place in your DAW.:::

hmmm...why not using an audio interface for this?
the saffire series for instance does provide a plugin like mixer where you can adjust the input signal levels..

@YADE ZEDs are supposedly having really good eqs for that price range, the saffire you mention needs some ADAT converter to make it really useful.
@Rogue that R16 is a wet dream of mine for quite some time, i never considered usb ones until i heard Tsarik has one, so i wanted to know how good it is. yeah i heard you can only import stereos or sends, but then there is really no need for usb. from what i've heard somewhere, the reluctance of people using firewire is that you are locked with the driver, which may not be developed in future, don't really know much about it, but i do prefer fw over usb 2.0 any day

@Dogmeat: well depends on the model and the needs he has...and he did not say anything about EQs...he just wanted SOLO and some routing possiblities...and with the Software you can create routing on the fly

I like to play my synths without turning on my computer everytime. With mixer and control room out i can fire my synth any time i want without fiddling with software. That's something i want to keep.

This is bit like what i'm looking for:

Just line level mixer (table version would be nicer). But this mixer doesn't have solo and that control room output..
