FLA are awesome soundwise, but the lyrics are repetitive and the vocals horrible. The songs are almost amazing, but lack better compositions.
Don't get me wrong, I like them, but the songwriting could be better.
Suggestions? shoot!
Electro, gothic, noise, darkwave from the Side-Line

VAC! old haujobb? kevorkian death cycle! oh wait they're just a shitty ripoff.
I got nothin'
i always thought Plastic Assault sounded A LOT like fla....but they only had one album, and i don't think the lyrics are particularly better, but you may still want to check them out if you haven't heard them.
The album "Mechanical Advantage" by THD comes to my mind (best track: "No Faith") ... they sound like early FLA. http://www.toodarkpark.org/thd/discog.html
If you don't mind guitars in industrial, you might dig MDM:

check out Fabious Corpus Act:
Noise Unit is basically just FLA with fewer vocals.
I wasn't aware that FLA had one specific sound. I've got pretty much every FLA CD that ever existed plus numerous remixes and all the side projects and there is a lot of variation to the material. Have you actually heard all of the discography including all the other side projects that don't have vocals?
Only you know the specific sound that you're searching for so the best idea is to use YouTube to search out stuff that might sound similiar to you. Also the COP Int. site has clips you can listen to plus iTunes can be useful. Personally, I thought Allied Vision - O.S. Bandwidth had a FLA feel to it.
"there is a lot of variation to the material"
hey... you're right. some of the stuff lifted from a bunch of techno producers and the rest is lifted from a bunch of sample cds.
Lol
Don't forget all the copped metal riffs.
Dismantled - Post Nuclear.. gary got a lot of shit for sounding like fla with this album, its the only dismantled album i like but i like it a fucking lot
maybe try some Biopsy... Unit 187... Battery Cage... Out Out...
i think you'd like coldwave as a genre from what i've observed cult... google it and check some shit out
definitely check out NVMPH.. they have 2 completely badass albums... wonder if they've done anything new.

gotta agree with Biopsy, Unit:187, and Out Out. at least the first two Battery Cage albums are FLA influenced, even though front line assembly is far better at arranging songs (respect & apologies to tyler newman). but, the nvmph is a bad recommendation.
As far as that dismantled comment goes... Postnuclear was the album the focus was heavily influenced by contemporary pop and rock music (Michael Jackson was a big one, and continues to be), more than Front Line Assembly. On the other hand, the objective of the self titled album was to get that "futuristic industrial trance" atmosphere like Front Line Assembly.
I find it bizarre that anybody would give Dismantled shit for sounding like Front Line Assembly. Since he started out on mindphaser.com, you know, Front Line Assembly's forum, as basically an FLA cover band (not literally but he was quite open with his intentions). I remember reading tons of support for that guy in those days... don't recall much bashing for sounding too much like one of their musical idols.
ideas: PYGMY CHILDREN, Biopsy, Allied Vision, Torrent Vaccine, & Katscan
Numb, Headscan, Skinny Puppy

Cyber Axis Final Sign for sure but you really would want to check out Megadump which was the 2nd incarnation of Cyber Axis. They are exactly what you are looking for. Try to find the songs Shockwave, Total Control for example. They mix the rough vocals with actual singing and he has a pretty good singing voice.
This is the only video they only made.

I find it pretty funny that FLA gets ripped on for using samples because techno producers end up using the same samples, from the same sample libraries. As for the metal guitar loops, read an interview. They used them on purpose and the samples were licensed properly.
Also the term "composition", has nothing to do with vocals or lyrics. FLA has great compositional value. Not just verse-chorus all the time. They often do extended intros, great bridges, transitions, breaks, and collisions. Very intriguing compositions, especially on the mid era LPs [Hard-Wired to Civilization]
"damage, frustration
is shaping our minds
our kids remain stupids
we´re standing in line."
Plastic Assault-Shotgun Blast
Yeah, pure Socrates there.
If you want better songwriting but music with the same level of creativity and production you are pretty much screwed. There is no substitute for FLA as a whole. You can get some similarities in tracks by DESTROID, early Dismantled, Allied Vision, and Splatterpunk. Only scattered tracks though.

I don't realy inderstand what Cult wants here. I like a lot of music. Some of it simple and stupid, some of it highly organised and complex. I can listen and enjoy everything from this:

And i still think Neural Tactical Implant is their best album, that Millenium SUCKS ASS, and all releases after that are only sub-standard.
I LOVE TNI, but as an album it was incomplete, it was the same idea musically, repeated. Millennium was a transition. They were hanging out with Fear Factory and it rubbed off. I think they ended up doing cold wave industrial better than anyone else-and they did it just by sampling great metal riffs into new songs. The sarcasm in this is great, but the fact that they did it on purpose as a homage to those other bands makes it brilliant. Especially since this release was on Roadrunner and you know they were being pressured to do a "rock album".
Hard Wired is the real successor to TNI though imo. They got to be FLA again, took many ideas from TNI but made it all more defined and direct.
I do not actually have a favourite FLA album. It always depends on my mood. I think they have successfully covered a lot of ground and for that I always put them above other electro-industrial acts.

Splatterpunk is a great recommendation, they have a bit more oomph than FLA and their songs take you somewhere.
@soillodge - good pts. I own a LOT of FLA albums but Millennium is not one of them. TNI was solid but on Hard Wired they brought together the power of technology with strong song writing to write a killer album.
