anyone else buy this great album?
make sure you get the cd because there is a code in the booklet to enter on their website in the "secret section", which gives you access to download the "8-Bits" music video and a live video of "Whatever Mattered" in mp4, along with several exclusive mp3s :)

I got it. It's pretty good though I didn't like it as much as Crossroads at first.
It's grown on my over the past week.Whatever Mattered is one of the best tunes they've ever made. The concept of the album is great however it's not as consistent as I wanted it to be.

Where's the live video from?
Also, how does this compare to Crossroad and Lost Alone? I have a hard time imagining they can reach those heights with a C64 tribute album...Posted 1 year ago # -
i'm a huge fan of Lost Alone and some stuff on the other albums, but I really couldn't get into what i heard from R.E.T.R.O. I guess I liked them more when they were dark and sad, now most of their stuff is too upbeat for my liking

@ Sumez - honestly, i dont know where the live video was shot, as its mostly close ups of instruments & band members. but, it is cool to hear a version of "Whatever Mattered" with live drums, guitars, keyboards, etc.
also, like all other albums by MIAB, its best to hear it as a whole front to back to truly appreciate

Lost Alone is the only other album I have. Worms is right.. its so upbeat sounding that my fiancee gave me a really weird look the first time i played it in the car.
synthpop like Welle Erdball and Beborn Beton is kinda like my dirty little secret pleasure.
sure i love the dark, abrasive and macabre... they're even my favorite. but I enjoy happier stuff just as much if not as often.
i think the album R.E.T.R.O really delivers if you're in to this kind of synth music. it doesn't sound cheesey or dated for being a c64 tribute album

I'm liking R.E.T.R.O. the more I listen to it.
There are some really outstanding tracks on it. It doesn't sound outdated.

It sounds exactly like Jean-Michel Jarre IMO.

@Rogue Process
Yeah, it kind of does. That's pretty cool. I think it's retro is a Jean-Michel Jarre sense not so much in a commodore 64 sense.

RETRO reminds me of a lot of other bands, luckily for them it doesn't remind me of their earlier releases (which I can't stand). I actually dig this album.

I've been listening to it for a few days now. It's an interesting diversion, more of a novelty album, and I agree with divider that "Whatever Mattered" is one of their best songs. But I'm eager for them to get back to their regular sound and the story of Mr. Black.

I got surprised by the album in a positive way. The fears that I had - me being a passionate Welle Erdball - despiser - did not become true. A good album and nice step beside the regular Mind.In.A.Box - track.

After another listen through this album just gets better. I really hope they continue with this sound and never look back at their old style.

Ok, this album was a let down. Of course, I didn't expect much from it, but while it's not exactly bad, it has nothing of what makes MIAB stand out. Mostly, I miss the vocals.
Though you can still hear that they have the spark that fuels the "MIAB creativity", so to speak, so it only makes me look even more forward to the next "real" album. And I agree, Whatever Mattered is great, it was nice to hear him show off his vocal ability at least once before the album ended.

I agree with Sumez. I knew that this release was a special release for MIAB, but I only dig the songs with vocals: The Last V8, 8 Bits, I Love 64, and Whatever Mattered. You Cannot Go Back To The Past is pretty much an instrumental even though Stev (apparently, he spells it that way now from reading the booklet) sings the song title in the song. It's not that the instrumental pieces are bad. They're good songs, but I'm just not big on instrumental song after instrumental song. (As much as I love Myer's work, I just can't stay focused to listen to Architect, and I own Galactic Supermarket (love that CD case), I Went Out Shopping To Get Some Noise, and The Analysis of Noise Trading.)
Plus, this will sound stupid, but I thought that this album would have more bloops and bleeps to it with this being an album inspired by their love for C64.
Stev's voice is very nice in Whatever Mattered, and I love his regular voice in other songs like You Will See and Sun & Storm. However, I'm glad that he processed his voice in songs like 8 Bits and I Love 64 akin to Fear, Change, Lost Alone, Amnesia, Dark & Light, Lament for Lost Dreams, etc.
I still look forward to their next album that hopefully will continue the Black theme.

Whatever Mattered is probably my favourite as well, even though it doesn't really fit in stylewise. Seemingly it's the one track they hope to incorporate into their live set (from interview below).

I think the plans are to release RETRO_2, RETRO_3 etc. in the future, as a Back And Forth type series. However, the next album returns to the Black storyline :-)

the 8.5 mix of "8 bits" sounds good
Posted 1 year ago # -
I don't care about the "storyline", but I care about the sound of the music :P
Posted 1 year ago # -
But for MIAB's case, doesn't the storyline help to make the sound of the music, giving it even an extra dimension, and drawing you in even more?

I completely respect MIAB for making this album but I think only the hardcore fans of MIAB will truly appreciate it. I like it a lot but I understand why it would turn off most people.
