This is quite interesting.
Okay, so you know Megaupload right? (Probably not since you all hate piracy) Well Megaupload is one of the biggest illegal filesharing sites for music and film on the net, and a couple of days ago hey released a big WTF pop video that featured a whole heap of big pop musicians (Black Eyed Peas, Kanye, P Diddy...) singing the praises of this file sharing site. The song and video were strange and gained a whole heap of views in a short amount of time.
Anyway, since it featured a whole heap of Universal artists, the clip was quickly flagged and taken off Youtube for "copyright infringement". Which doesn't make sense, because it was an original song made by Megaupload with the consent of each artist. Follow so far?
Turns out that this was part of a much bigger plan from Megaupload. Megaupload is somewhat blacklisted by the major labels and the companies trying to prevent file sharing, and it is understood that the major labels use bots to scour Youtube and take down content they don't approve of (but don't publicly acknowledge doing). So Megaupload knew that posting the video would cause Universal to take the content down without any legal grounds to do so, and are now going to use this as leverage to sue Universal.
Maybe I've explained this poorly. Read more here:
