making your own percussion sounds

(12 posts)

  1. so i was listening to Babyland's album "Cavecraft"

man.. the percussion sounds on this album are some of the most impressive I've ever heard on an industrial album. they sound completely original and very organic as if someone was actually beating on some object to make that specific sound. I don't know how they made their sounds but I've been inspired to make my own.

so I'm making my own little sample pack of percussion sounds.

anyone else program their own drums sounds? have anything to share?

making my own sounds is pretty labor intensive but I like the idea that I've crafted everything. It also makes it easier to forge my own song structures and work out my own experiments.

  2. a friend of mine who is into ultra artsy experimental shit makes all his own percussion by going around with a portable recorder and recording himself banging on anything he can find in different environments. He later samples it into his sp404 and mucks with it. I've done some stuff with him and taken some of these sounds and layered/edited them to make them more drum-like. I'm not a huge fan of using 100% found sound percussion, but they can sound really nice when layered with a regular hat or snare or whatever.

  3. sounds like an awesome friend to have.

i haven't started banging on anything... yet.

just programming them on my XS then recording them dry and with diff FX and then combining them into 1 hit.

when I've made enough sounds to be useful to someone I'll upload them so others can use them too if they want.

  4. I don't record any drum sounds, but I sample the shit out of movies and TV for percussion sounds. Discovery channel documentaries have great foley.

  8. Babyland has always used a ton of live percussion in their material. It is one of the big reasons I have loved them for so long. That is a staple of older Industrial like Z'ev and Crash Worship. Even Pigface had an arrangement featuring two drummers playing off of each other's rhythms. Brilliant stuff.

Personally I use percussion sounds from many different sources. I have sampled or found samples from tons of different vintage synths, I used to have a cathode ray tube hooked up with mic and a sheet of metal that I used to drum on live. I still use those samples sometimes. My newest idea was to commission Chris from I, Parasite to use his modular sys and make a whole set of percussion like sounds. I have never heard a synth with more strength and clarity, so I am really excited to see how this set turns out.

@Tsarik: well I live near the city where they make the hangs...I ordered one 16Months ago....if I am lucky I am allowed to pick mine next june or so.....you also need to write a handwritten letter to the hang builders to get one....I am from time to time in the Hanghaus in Berne playing some of them...they sound so....well not from this world...but the handsonic does a great job for the more terrestrial sounds :-)

  11. I all about gave up drooling over the Hang Drum. Why does PANart make it so difficult to obtain?

    TACOS!

I recently bought a book called The Synthesizer Cookbook and it has a section for programming patches which contains details on programming both tuned and untuned percussion.

I haven't tried programming percussion yet, only the other patches and so far I'm satisfied with the book.

It sells on ebay for like 20 bucks
