@Tsarik The algorithms in the Mangler I'm referring to are the Aliaser and the Quantizer which according to the manual do sample rate reduction and bit rate reduction respectively. And to view the resulting waveforms that does appear to be what is going on. I've noticed that some really interesting things happen though when you modulate the spectral content of your signal with a filter or even just the amplitude. Then these effects take on a new dimension. By doing this with my Polaris I am getting what sounds like vocal formants and other strange effects usually associated with fixed filter banks and comb filters. Having experimented with homemade bit reduction devices I know that for each "step" superimposed on a wave by a quantizer you get new harmonic spectra unrelated to the fundamental. SO I think what I am hearing is the interplay of my synth's modulation against the transform of the quantize resolution. i like it very much. The results are unexpected and interesting.
As for general distortion and overdrive though the unit has some pleasant surprises. Some of the tube emulations are really quite warm and gritty. The frequency shifter and ring mod are some of the coolest algorithms too.

@Dogmeat
Thanks for your assistance, you've given me the closest solution so far, but I am so unknowledgeable with circuitry that I don't really understand what I'd need to do in terms of the MIDI board.
Should I contact the guy again an ask for... a circuit diragram? What do I need to know if I am to build the nessesary MIDI board?
Alternatively, the BassBoy looks interesting. But how on earth do you trigger it? It looks like it has one single TRS jack and that's it.
Sorry to bug you, but I've been trying to build this thing for a year and I'm getting nowhere. As soon as I can a run of the mill bare bones synth working with my 25 key MIDI keboard, I'm going to uncase them and throw them together in a totally killer keytar. I don't care if I'm paying a bit extra, I just want this fucking keytar.
Seriously, my aim is to create the first keytar that can get you laid, and nothing less. This thing is going to be a beast.

ok, first things first,
1) what YM basically is is an arduino-like microcontroller strapped to yamaha's chip on one side (it makes sound), and the ftdi chip on the other, that communicates via usb, so you would need to hijack two lines that go from microcontroller to the USB chip, and solder them to some midi in circuit, for example:
http://www.sinneb.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/arduinomidiin1.gif
http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1187962258/
THEN you would need to either:
1. change the firmware yourself, to get the serial to send at 31250 bauds-per-sec, which is MIDI speed, this is only if you have the original source code, if the project is open source, then burn that firmware to the chip
2. get the compiled firmware with MIDI support in a .hex file, then burn it to a chip
3. get the whole burned chip from the guy who sold you the kit
it is all rather complicated if you do not intend to play with arduinos, and just want the solutionok, on the bassboy, it has several pins, much like the YM kit, to connect MIDI adapter to it, if you go that route, you would need to confirm a few things before you bought it:
1. is it regular midi or midi over usb
2. do you get the needed midi adapter with it, this would allow you to connect any regular midi cable to the bassboy
guys at mikroe are ok, i worked for them in the past, and they make nice, durable electronicserrrm, about the keytar....here is the one that a local guy made...

...it is unabashedly KVLT, and since it is made out of m-audio mid-air (or similarly named) wireless midi keyboard, you can run those axl rose stage runs in your underpants without a probleem :)Posted 10 months ago # -

@YADE he asked for a MIDI synth, hardsid is USB only

What about a handful of Blacet modules. I think you can still buy some of them as PCB-only kits. Their VCO, MiniWave and MIDIverter would make a nice core for a barebones 8 bit synth. A simple FET switching circuit triggered by the Gate output and fed from the Velocity output can be sent into a simple lag generator and used to control a VCA across the output of the Miniwave. OR skip the lag and just use the Gate to turn the Miniwave output on and off with a transistor. IF you have enough space to work with in the keytar case IT might be worth the trouble to also add the Delay/Attack/Decay module and the Dual Linear VCA. Since you would be hardwiring it all together panel space is reserved for only the controls and output patch points.

coach outlet nicely? WTF?
Anyway, another suggestion is the Casio CZ-101. They have guitar strap pegs so they can be worn like a keytar and internally the DAC only has 5 bit reosultion like the rest of the CZ series synths.
