  1. Topic title essentially. My Virus KB is my workhorse, and seeing as it could be out of commission for a while, i'm looking for a good VST alternative to it and don't mind dropping the cash.

I already have U-HE's Zebra and use Massive, but i'm looking for that aggressive midrangey sound that the virus has. I'm mostly hardware based so i'm probably not as well informed with VSTs as some of you, as I know a lot of the industrial people are mostly software based, so i'm curious if you guys have any ideas.

I've been looking at Vember Audio's Surge and maybe Z3ta+. I used Z3ta+ WAAAAAY before I got my virus but then erased it as i'm not a fan of warez. I'd be buying whatever is suggested to me.

A few people I know rate Sylenth as a Virus replacement. http://www.lennardigital.com/modules/home/

Z3ta has that middy sound but personally I never got on with the interface. Bought a Virus in the end! :)

  3. Sylenth eh?

Seems it has a demo. Cool. I'll check it out.

  4. From my experience, Sylenth is nowhere near as flexible or deep, but the filter sounds beautiful.
There's Linplug Albino as well, which has a lot of similarities to the virus (phat PWM, configurable dual filter, etc), but it doesn't sound nearly as wild or fun as the Virus.
Oh, and if you're a fan of the Virus's FM capabilities, there's VOPM, which is a wonderful little freeware emulation of Yamaha's OPL-2 FM architecture.

i'm all over fxpansion's dcam synth squad lately (was referred to it from here on the boards actually), they are incredible sounding virtual synths.

"i'm looking for that aggressive midrangey sound that the virus has"

if you crank up the filter drive stage in strobe or cypher you get a sound that i'd describe as aggressive in the mid-range.

Audjoo Helix could be another possible suggestion.

Sometimes I will use the Virus B as a starting point
to come up with a bassline or melody and then use
Helix as the actual instrument in a track. Well,
    let's say usually.

Zebra 2.5 has an oscillator brightness option.
Adam Szabo has Virus like patches for Zebra, Sylenth, Massive, Zeta, and Vanguard.
Psycox has a good free bank for Zebra.
Also checkout Zero Vector, Suriv for Reaktor, Gladiator, Firebird, and Rapture.

I think Vanguard or Firebird sound quite similar.

  12. @ Eric - Nexus is a ROMpler. It's good if you just want a dialled-in synth pad or typical trance lead sound, but anything more adventurous than that, and you're on very thin ground.

  13. Actually i've got Nexus, had it for years. I'm looking for something programmable :).

So far i'm liking Sylenth and Gladiator.

Hey Fractured, did you still wanna do a TCE remix? New EP coming in August-Sept, deadline: soon. My e-mail: plaguesequence (at) gmail.com.

  16. Sticking with Albino for now. Might not sound the best, but it does the most. Looks like my virus is bricked, but I'm going to buy another one.

  17. I think Albino is your best bet. Leads and basslines you can make on pretty much anything, but to get that cool virus pad or nice sequenced hits Albino comes very close.

What happened to your Virus anyhow? What was the final diagnosis? I want to keep an eye on mine because it was a bitch to find.

That's closer to the point. A Virus can cover a lot of sonic turf and while very few soft synths sound as good and cover as much ground, they can do certain things quite well.

I've never found a soft synth that does everything a Virus does but I've heard a few that can replicate certain areas and sonic colours.
