I just can't take it seriously because the very concept of complaining about subtitles just seems so out of this world to me.
Watching shows like Turtles, Dino Riders or Inspector Gadget as a kid, I had to read subtitles just to understand what was going on (nowadays, every cartoon marketed towards children is subtitled, but obviously not stuff like Simpsons, Family Guy or South Park) - if a kid can read them, why can't a grown up American?
EVERY SINGLE MOVIE that's not Danish (or an animated children's movie) is shown with subtitles, how else would people who aren't good at English, or whatever language is used, be able to understand them?? Imagine a classic movie like, say, Blade Runner, og a comedy full of memorable quotes, like, Anchorman, dubbed into a different language - it would suck out every bit of anything that makes it worth watching.
Or imagine only being able to watch crappy Danish budget movies (there ARE great Danish movies, but only like 4 or 5), missing out on everything from French art movies to awesome Hollywood bluckbusters, simply because you don't want to read stuff!
Even when I have an English DVD without Danish subtitles, I prefer watching it with the English subtitles on - hell I even watch Danish movies with Danish subtitles, because it always makes it much easier to follow what's going on, especially if there's some background noise, unintelligible muttering, or you just aren't paying full attention. Hell, I watched the latest Harry Potter movie without subtitles the other day and I had NO idea what was going on, because half the words they spoke were weird names and terms from the HP universe that I'm not really into (thank god!) - subtitles would have made it a lot easier to follow.
