Recently I picked up a KORG MS-2000B. It's super clean and doesn't even look like anyone ever even played it. I already made a few sick patches. For an analog modeling synth it sure sounds analog to me. That is all.

Great synth, I have the blue version. Really sick and twisted possibilities when you use the virtual patching. Look up how to make it a drum machine as well. I have made some really cool pieces with it as a drum machine.

Explain more about "Virtual Patching" please. I downloaded the owners manual PDF from Korg and it talks briefly about it. What attracted me to it was a bunch of YouTube videos, in particular this one guy made some incredible patches that morphed and evolved into some really crazy shit. To me sonically it really went into the Andromeda A6 area. As I play around with it I'm discovering all of the cool features it has.
As you know I had a Virus Ti for about a year and besides it sounding really incredible for certain things I always thought it has this dry sort of sterile digital sound to it. Plus it was glitchy as a motherfucker what with all the freezing up, clicking, popping, hissing and other random bullshit it pulled on a regular basis. Not features I was looking for in a $2800 keyboard for sure.
Now I'm looking to find a used Alesis Ion next to check out for awhile...

Yeah, I did not like any of the Virus's from the C series on. The A and B just had a certain grittiness and personality to them.
The virtual patching is just like modular patching except it's LED lights instead of patch cables and it's a lot more limited than a modular system.
You see the patch section has 2 main areas- source and destination. So you light up what you want to access and then mess with those areas on the board itself. You can send LFO's to modulate noise level or filters. Velocity or MIDI to modulate OSC frequencies. You can do some really great stuff. Then mess with the effects, simple but they sound great. It has a meaty distortion for basses, a really nice digital delay feature. It is a sick machine really.

Funny you should say that because I played the A version when they first came out and dreamed one day I would be able to afford it so that day came and I thought the TI would be the same but it wasn't at all. Very sterile and digital. I played a C in a pawn shop before I bought the TI and then went back to pick it up and it was gone. I thought even it sounded better than the TI.

make sure you update the firmware to the latest version....they had a pretty ugly timing bug in it ..guess it was pre 1.07 or so....arp run constantely out of sync

the "aux in" is a nice feature. love running random signals thru it. speed time, depth feedback & frequency knobs are especially fun. makes a nice gritty feedback delay reminiscent of crispy "space echo" repeats.

Is there any way to adjust the tempo of a patch besides the "Tempo" knob? This fucking thing is touchy as hell and won't allow me to dial in the correct tempo. For instance, I'm trying to set it at 260 and it jumps from 258 to 263 with the slightest turn of the knob.

It's been so long since I messed with the sequencer, I do not believe there is. Maybe you can set it manually in the menu though? I don't recall, I need to fire it up and look.

man, I've owned an MS2000 for years now, was my first ever synth
it certainly has a grit to it that can be cool
i used to love cranking the LFO's on it, using the distortion/noise and fucking with delays and stuff with one of my old bands
could make some cool noises in transitions and things live(at least I thought so at the time)
hardly use it now.
re: comparisons to TI
totally doesn't compare
sorry but my TI blows my MS2000 out of the water in basically every way imaginable
I know people like to have soft spots for older or cheaper synths (specially if they have some kind of character)
but really.. sometimes better is better!when I put them next to each other... the MS2000 is bland and limited
and the TI I can sculpt to do anything I wantanyway.. spose in some ways thats subjective.
if you like it better than the TI
then awesome.re: tempo
yeh the tempo knob is a bitch
click the edit button, and then one of the 16 light up buttons can shortcut to a place in the settings where you can adjust it with the +/- buttons
tempo is saved per patch so set it up for the BPMs of the songs in your set / or that you're working on.I'm not 100% which button, try number 15 (ARP)
and hit the "page +" button till you find the tempo parameter listed on the LCD
it's quite quick to navigate once you get the hang of itPosted 7 months ago #
