is this legit?

  1. I've searched the net for a retailer that sold Native Instruments FM8 without all the other shit. I couldn't find a single retailer that did so.

    I saw this today.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Native-Instruments-Fm8-full-version_W0QQitemZ110495326379QQcmdZViewItemQQptZKeyboards_MIDI?hash=item19ba08e0ab

new Ebay seller.. selling multiple copies of FM8 and other VST stuff.

Is this legit? Its pretty fucking cheap too. Seems questionable.

I thought having heared that NI will discontinue to further develop FM8....so this could maybe be some rest of it....

if you want to be sure ask the guy to activate the license in the NI Service Center and show you a screenshot and then de-register it again...

  3. you should just buy Komplete man...I know you "only" want to use FM8, but the package is seriously so worth it. I know you are all about hardware and so forth, but if you're going to spend the money to buy FM8 at all, you might as well pay slightly more get Komplete (not sure what it goes for now, but when I bought it, the cost of Reaktor alone was nearly as much as the bundle). I GUARANTEE down the line you will love using some of the other stuff in the package.

  4. I do not see how it could be a legit copy of the program when it retails for 200$

Plus NI has an extensive activation and serial process. You have to match your ID account to a product, and they have a separate prog called the NI service center that manages all this info. It is really a pain in the ass.

  5. haha.. man i don't want to be thought of as one of those Hardware Only guys.

analog synths... no substitute really. only 99% of what happens in an analog circuit can be explained with math. that other 1% is magic. so yeah 100% hardware there... with maybe 1 exception... polyphonic synths. polyphonic analog synths are really fucking expensive... so i may get 1 but I wouldn't ever badmouth an Access Virus, Nord or any of the other stellar VA synths.

any other type of synthesis and its pretty much all software based with the exception of converters and shit which can add to the sound.

the reason I have tried to stay all hardware is transportability and reliability. my antec 1200 PC case weights like 80 pounds.. and PC monitors don't travel well.. and the more and more I start to move ITB the more and more i need other things like studio monitors, etc.

so sticking to hardware keeps costs down for me.. at this point. I definitely don't subscribe to the analog only camp or thinks software sucks because of any of the reasons people try to justify bashing it.

at the end of the day though... I'm an accountant. I have no desire for a career in music. so for me at least, it makes more sense to get Hardware synths that will travel well and allow me to jam with friends, and it makes more sense to get a nice PA instead of nice studio monitors because those travel well and are much more loud.

  6. thx for that Michael. i actually never checked Musician's Friend. $200 seems really fucking silly when Komplete costs $500.

looks like its back to lusting after the yamaha fs1r until i can find a mint one for sale.

  7. no prob- tbh I have had Komplete for a long time now and I have only used the FM8 a handful of times. I like the user FM syths that people made in Reaktor a lot more. But I am also like you, I really enjoy hardware for the same reasons and at your point my advice would be to opt for a hardware FM synth like you have been doing. Ingo says the FS1r is a monster and I tend to have the same interests as him, but I have only ever used the DX synths. The DX1 is an amazing synth if you can ever find one. Not as many operators as the FS1r but the UI is pretty cool and it is basically 2 DX7's in one.

The most authentic sounding VST FM synth I have found is the SUK audio SUKFM for Reaktor.
    http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=userlibrary&plview=detail&patchid=8090

It's a classic 4 operator set-up, and GUI is really clean and functional. It is all over a lot of my R010R stuff. It basically replaced my using the NI FM7 during Noise Process. Plus the MIDI learn of the Reaktor synths is a real help when mapping to various controllers like the X-Station or Block.

  8. hey, I love hardware too. I've got a virus ti and a prophet 08 and a bunch of other junk. it's great shit, sounds amazing, would never ever ditch it for software. The only software synths I use are from Komplete. IMO, hardware sounds so much better than software, but I was pretty blown away by some of the stuff I heard from NI vsts. The one I use most is Absynth, because it does really awesome stuff my hardware never could. And there is really no reason not to own Reaktor. In theory if you just get Reaktor and a DAW, you've got everything you'll need to make music.

  9. If you're into FM type sounds, just get VOPM - it's a VST emulation of Yamaha's OPL-2 chip (the same thing that powers the Megadrive's sound system). Totally basic and dirty FM, but some of the sounds you can get out it kick a lot of ass.

Agreed on the FS1R lust though. I saw one on Ebay UK not so long ago for 500 quid... I was way beyond tempted!

@WOTE: What do you think of your Prophet 08? I've played with it on a couple of occasions - one time it absolutely blew me away but other times it sounded really average. I've already got an A6 for poly-analogue goodness but I'm wondering what someone who has owned a Prophet 08 for a while thinks of it.

honestly, I am disappointed. Now, if you have a huge hard-on for vintage synths and re-creations of an old prophet with NOTHING new or exciting, than you will probably love it. However, for the price, I am pretty blown away but how much it DOESN'T have. Now, maybe I don't understand the supposed inherent greatness of this thing because of its "legit 100% analog signal path" or whatever, but after using Access synths for a few years, I can't help but be like "um, where are all the features?". Anyway, yeah the sound of it is great, the filter is fucking phenomenal, it can replicate old gritty analog sound well. The presets are total shit, which isn't the end of the world but I found it extremely discouraging to open the box you dropped a ton of money on, flip through these terrible presets and go "wow this thing really sounds shit, is this all it can do?" (again, used to the virus where the presets actually showcase the abilities of the synth). But what really gets me is that I sold a mopho because I thought I was making a huge upgrade to the prophet...only to find out the mopho had these new features to it (sub osc, etc) that the prophet didn't even have, despite its ridiculous 2399 price tag! Thank christ I got a ridiculously good deal on it, otherwise i'd probably sell it for a tetra and spend the difference on other gear. So in summary: yeah it is a got a solid analog sound, you can build some good shit with it, but I think it's way the fuck overpriced for what it offers.

@WOTE: That is disappointing to hear! I'm really surprised it doesn't have things like sub-oscs as well.
I really liked the Mopho as well (especially with the software-editor - the pattern seq's were a lot of fun), and I think the Prophet 08 is capable of some magic based on my very limited experience with it.
But I'm not a fan of Dave these days. I think releasing the Mopho and quickly superceding it with a 4-voice version in the form of the Tetra at a similar price is a total dick-move. And then to come out with a Mopho-keyboard edition after that, feels even clumsier.
Compare it to Moog, who make bona fide instruments that are beautiful to behold and use. DSI's actions seem like a company clinging on to a market or responding to user requests after the fact, always a step behind. By all reports the DSI PEK is a bit flimsy and iffy for the flagship that it is. But find me one person who regrets buying a Voyager! Moog's just doing something right, with an understanding of what makes a real instrument (same goes for Access), while DSI's playing catch-up.

    Sorry o/t rant :D
