Anyone been making music with their iPhones?
I finally got one (an iPhone 4) 2 days ago and I've already made 2 little songs using Nanostudio. Check 'em out:

    http://soundcloud.com/virul3nt/nanostudio-iphone-demo-001
    http://soundcloud.com/virul3nt/nanostudio-iphone-demo-002-mini-shuffle

That first one got picked up overnight by a few music tech feeds and shot up to over a thousand views, with even the developers Blip Interactive commenting. I'm pretty chuffed with that!

    Check out Nanostudio here: http://www.blipinteractive.co.uk/

Next on my list of apps to get is the Xenon groove synthesiser: http://iphone.icegear.net/xenon
Looks like it covers much the same ground as Nanostudio but I'm still interested in checking it out.

I jailbroke my iPhone and tried to get the cracked version of Nanostudio (yeah I'm a pirate... arrr!) but it didn't work.

However I'm using akai's synthstation which provides a drum machine and 3 synths and it's pretty damn cool.

  3. Neat! These apps just keep getting better. I wish I had an Ipad now :P

I did some tracks with Hexatone and I mess with the Argon at work. But the stupid Ipod keeps getting an error while "syncing", and I usually have to restore it to defaults every couple months-it fucks up all the projects and games I had been advancing on. The whole sync operation is the most terrible apple idea ever. It is beyond fucking frustrating to have to reload everything all the time.

I hope some other hand held developers get on the wagon soon with cool music apps. Do they even have anything like these on the Droid?

Fuck iTunes man. I use iPhone PC Suite to manage my iPhone.

Here's another track I did last night:

I really hate having to "sync" too. I can render a mixdown-wav within Nanostudio, but I can't find it and play it back on my iPhone. Instead I have to transfer it to my Mac over WiFi to a program called Nanosync, then import it into iTunes, plug in my iPhone and sync it. Ridiculous!
At least I can backup my projects using Nanosync.

ReBirth and TechnoBox are also great apps if you're into 909s and acid!

  8. @ Virul3nt - Sorry dude, even after hearing your demos (even if they are really cool), there's still nothing that makes me think I want one of these things. If I need to work on ideas on the go, I've got my gameboy/LSDJ ;)

Although just because I'm a nerd and my phone runs Linux, I may at some point soon just start doing remote desktop over SSH and just use Logic on my phone :D

Fair enough @Rogue :) To be honest, being able to make music on my phone grabbed me by the bell-end for the first 3 days. But last night I tried to make a 4th song and felt as though I'd ran out of drive for it.
Guess it's time for me to get back to making "real" music!

@Soillodge: the developer, Blip Interactive, commented on one of my above tracks in response to someone asking about Android. Apparantly Android has way too much audio latency to make an app like this feasible, so that'll have to be addressed before they can look at porting Nanostudio over to it.

If there's one thing Apple's OS' seem to get right, it's audio latency. Playing soft-synths on the Windows vs the Mac partitions of my iMac, on the same software, is astronomically different. Mac wins in that sense every time...

  11. @ Michael and Pete - Well, apps on Android are run through a Java VM, so yeah, unfortunately until Google allow you to execute native code the audio on Droid is gonna be shit. Shame really.

    Ohhh, so that's why. That's a shame..but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before it's sorted out.

  13. Yeah, they're looking at a whole bunch of 3D-accelerated games for Android 3, so I'm guessing they're gonna need some sort of native method for getting that running at decent speed. Considering Android is now outselling the iPhone it seems silly that Google wouldn't work to take advantage of that.

What do you mean Android is out-selling the iPhone? Do you mean the Google-phone specifically, or the sundry phones powered by Android OS? I wouldn't be surprised if you meant the latter - the market is flooded with phones using Android OS...

I haven't bought any games for the iPhone yet 'cause I'm trying to keep the costs down.
To that end, I made a fourth track in Nanostudio:
    http://soundcloud.com/virul3nt/nanostudio-iphone-demo-004-vengeful
    :)

Oh I also got an IK Multimedia iRig adaptor. This works really well! The latency is pretty not-noticable for playing guitar through. Might put up an audio demo when I instal some more amps...

Im still using the 'bebot' app in live performance. Its an old app but really, a fucking awesome sound. Effectively an moog-like analogue sounding synth controlled by the touchscreen in a theremin kinda way, pitch on the x-axis and filter cutoff on the y-axis.
Its actually playable with a bit of practice.

nanoloop is a great iphone piece of software, it has a decent sampler which really nicely mangles input audio, the only problem is that you need a mac to download separate channels for now

  18. Ugh-Java, yeah that makes sense. Too bad because as far principles go I hate apple. But no other device works for me like the Touch.

I love the games on the Ipod, but I am not looking for anything next-gen either. I am happy with 2-d and cartooney as long as the games are fun.

Lately I have been using a lot of the DrumTrack8 to lay some beats at work and then work them on my MC 909 when I get home.

The interface is very simple and it's very easy to organize patterns into songs.
