This is a pretty interesting format. The iElectribe is majorly awesome-looking too, especially at $9.99 (intro price).

It was also recently hinted that the iPad will indeed support USB audio interfaces (http://createdigitalmusic.com/2010/04/14/apple-ipad-may-support-usb-audio-interfaces-via-camera-accessory-kit/#more-10543)

I'll wait and see if more apps become available before getting too hot under the collar for it. But a killer app for me would be a simple Traktor DJ Studio-type program. This way I could prepare my DJ sets & practice on the train/plane/whatever to out-of-town DJ gigs. I couldn't really imagine it as a laptop replacement for live shows - an iPad would probably sit somewhat precariously on an Ultimate Apex stand. But if it could run a good DJ program, and maybe sync up some virtual grooveboxes like the iElectribe (imagine if D16 made an iPad app!), I'd be well interested.

Anyone taken the plunge yet? Any cool apps to look out for or any apps on your wish-list?

  2. I am not going to bother with it until the 2nd or 3rd gen. Too many bugs right now. But currently there are great apps that make this the best solution as a touch-screen controller/interface. Touch OSC, Argon, Hexatone Pro, Synthpond, Audio Pallet, Curtis Heavy, Jasuto. Unless other developers get on the ball with other touch screen OS's, Apple has them smoked. and again, I do not even like Apple, but I love the technology and the applications this presents.

Waiting is probably a good idea indeed, rather than jumping in on first gen.

I'm not really interested in pairing it with a computer and just using it as a control-surface. I'm much more interested in using it as a standalone device, but as it stands there aren't really enough apps to justify it. At least not that I'm aware of!

  4. I'm thinking a Windoze 7 netbook would be a better choice at a 1/3 of the price with plenty of money left over to buy some flavor of Traktor or perhaps Audio 2, 4 or 8 DJ Audio Interface.

if guys from cycling'74 made a max/msp runtime for ipad....uhhhh....that would be nice
and would the usb port for audio interface be usable for midi interfaces as well, that would also be nice. i don't think ipad will be able to do some serious multitimbral/polyphonic dsp, but to allow usage of external synths....mmmmmm.....

I am doing the same. I am going to wait till the first couple of generations pass for these touch computers and hopefully by then I can run a virtual studio on one of them like Flstudio. It will finally be the same feeling I used to have when I would write a song with my guitar on my lap instead of sitting at a desk.

@Eric- except the Windows 7 apps on the touch screen are the same as the regular version. What fun is that? I do not want to just touch current apps, I want to see and hear new shit that makes you think outside the normal ideas.

This is a pretty bad video, the way it's shot makes you expect a Happy Ending (the guys behind the camera are arrogant fuckwads), but the DJ potential of the iPad is starting to be explored here:

"If you want him to dance you'd better play some ACDC on that thing..." is as disrespectful as saying "I don't care what you're doing on those electronic-doohickeys, why don't you take off your top and dance around a little?". Poor lass.

I dunno how she sync's the programs though; the programs don't appear to have any kind of "nudge" button. She mentions them being "sync'd", but I think she just means they're the same BPM.
I wish grooveboxes and synth-arpeggiators ALL had "nudge" buttons, actually, for live performance.. but whatever!

@Michael: that is a seriously bad-ass modular patch! But the control surface (iPhone) I could do without tbh!

    iPad is a shitty name.

  12. @virul3nt- it's just a X-Y app, you could do whatever. The point is that you can control your modular with wifi. We are not chained to the beast like old ELP or Pink Floyd on stage. Imagine the live applications :D

@Cult- I agree. I actually think the whole "i", concept theme is fucking shitty. But still, the tech and and apps are solid and usable. Many other companies are just working with conjecture.

i think ipad is a bit underpowered for daw, but from what i heard yesterday IT IS POSSIBLE to connect a class compliant usb 1.0 midi interface to it (class compliant=doesn't need drivers) as well as audio interfaces, so i guess it is only a matter of time before someone makes something like this http://www.filter24.org/seq24/ for it

  16. You could make a Kaoss Pad-type app for it. Single channel, I bet it could handle it.

  17. I wonder if this software would work on an iPad:

  18. It should. It is easy to convert apps from the Iphone to the Ipad.

This app looks ugly, but if it works and sounds cool I could excuse it.

There are actually various apps on the ipad you can use to make it function as your ultimate music gadget. There are dj turn tables and thanks to the multi touch capability, it can almost mirror how it is used in real life.

I can also use it as my amplifier and effects board though it would require a third party cable you can probably buy online.
