    Hey Everyone,

I have a DJ gig coming up and a friend requested me to do an Industrial set which is slightly out of the ordinary for me, but I thought it would be fun to have a go at it.

Growing up, I did listen to Industrial so it isn't new. Honestly though, I am out of the loop and not even worried about going past the 2000's at this point.

What I want to create for this set is an "essential listening" collection of tracks, the kind of thing that would serve to educate a person unfamiliar with Industrial music about various acts that are seen as important or pivitol.

Now I am going to be spinning this stuff in like a week and it must be mixable. So, no TG, NON, SPK etc. etc. Here are a few bands I am going to include:

Skinny Puppy - Nine Inch Nails - Laibach - KMFDM - Cabaret Voltaire - Ministry (or at least a Jourgensen side project) - Front 242 - Fad Gadget - Front Line Assembly

    Am I missing anyone?

BTW The annoying thing about this is that most of the more creative "Industrial" acts are also just weird to mix, or too noisy.

Like how most of Foetus's music sounds like a big band on crack! Or how Laibach can sound like a socilist political rally on acid--hard to mix!

I have a gig for the Nikola Tesla festival and was planning on spinning some good Industrial and would like to have a corresponding mix CD to hand out with it--we'll see if I have enough time.

DAS ICH are another one I just thought of!

Definitely was gonna drop Clock DVA's The Hacker, but I gotta admit that from what I have heard his music starts to get a little repetitive ;-)

Nitzer Ebb and Leathstrip are getting checked out next methinks.

I'm interested in Portion Control and Chemlab since they keep coming up.

If you're determined to stick to "mixable" (whatever that means) music that avoids anything too weird or noisy, you're not giving your audience a fair education on the subject of industrial music. Who is making that restriction, you or the gig organizer?

"Very Friendly" 18 min version...... that would be sweet. Check out Mutant Throbbing Gristle CD. There are some tracks from TG that fit right in like "United".

Some other classic acts to think about:

    Siglo XX
    Suicide
    Tackhead
    Borghesia
    à;GRUMH...
    Ionic Vision

@Brapley It's more about not wanting to offend people or drive them too crazy while still retaining some creative breathing room.

If I played early SPK, the noisier stuff by Neubauten, NON, Monte Cazazza, or most of TG I might get asked to pack up and leave, although I would of course include all of the above if I were throwing an all-out Industrial party for people that appreciate such things that much... Honestly, it's hard to find people that do.

Then play Metal Field from SPK.

    Also:
    Numb
Johnson Engineering Co. (more EBM than classic Industrial, but still)
    Inside Treatment
    Tommi Stumpff

Personally i would go for the noisy stuff, because i found out it works much better with more mainstream audiences then more "friendly" sounding industrial. Most of that stuff sounds pretty outdated, and even if its new it has a certain sound which does not appeal to people outside the scene.

I don;t know what party of fest you will be DJing. But you might delve into the rhytmnic industrial genre which, apart from the industrial crowd, will also get techno/elektro/dance oriented people interested. This genre basically combines techno with industrial and is highly dancable and mixable.

Acts: Asche, Fabrikc, Noisuf-X, Mono-amine, Converter, Imminent starvation, Maschinenkrieger kr52 vs disraptor, Mono no aware, The peoples republic of Europe (see what i did there? :D), Phosgore, Winterkalte, 100 Blumen and such.

In my experience the very noisy techno oriented stuff works very well on most audiences, while KMFDM would only bore them. But thats what my experience is. I mostly DJ dance oriented audiences. If you gonna play a rock oriented the bet is pretty much off.

I recommend that rhythmic stuff too, but I know that in countries with a strong country and wester rock history the rhythmn noise have not that tradition. There is an audience for this in the US of course...but different than in the dutch and germany.

  16. For what it's worth, some of the bands you're discounting do have the odd mixable/danceable track. From TG, try "Hot on the Heels of Love," and from Laibach, "Geburt Einer Nation" is a nice stompy classic at about 110 BPM — just cue it up to the beginning of the drum.

Similarly, you might find some danceable Test Dept., and Neubauten's "Haus Der Luge" (or "Die Interimsliebenden") are good on the floor too. If you're looking for catchy Coil, try "The Wheel."

Pretty much any WaxTrax!, Some Bizzare, or Third Mind release should do the trick here. I might go into the 90s a little with some XMPT, Leaether Strip, and Mentallo.

Yes, that's exactly the song I was thinking of. Why it is so unknown is beyond me..

Another under the radar Artist: Scapa Flow. "let Sleeping Mummies Lie" may be a nice addition to the possible candidates for this DJ set.

    shapeshifter..........

    "Thug"

The CD is tough to come by for the most part, the 7" is impossible.
