Greetings and Salutations! This is my frist post, as well as being a matter I've been speculating for quite some time. First off, I recently finished creating the music itself for each and every one of my songs that I'll be incorporating with my future album, which I had made using my DAW and all the lyrics written for each song. The problem is I'm lost on what kind of mic and amp I'll need that would be most sufficient for recording dark electro/aggrotech music, as well as performing live in future. Also, would a VST plug-in be equaly adequate for distorting harsh vocals for both live shows and recording? If not, what hardware within a reasonable price range would you most reccommend for me? In addition, is there also a VST plug-in that would be considerably better than the standard ones found in DAWs? As you can already tell, I'm pretty much a noob still, but any reccommended suggestions and admonishment will be greatly appreciated.

opcion de busqueda es tu amigo!
you are going to find two schools of thought here, first one is everyone, who will tell you just to buy sm58, cheap, pro, durable, you can fight with your audience with it, and it will survive, and then, there is Yade, who will tell you to buy a $900 mic, which is also fine, if you want to go pro like he is,
if this is a hobby, your first mic, you're unemployed/on welfare, student, or don't know how pro you want to be, in my opinion it is best to buy sm58, you can record it in your room with headphones, and it will sound decent if you process it right (preamp-compressor-eq-then mangling effects), and start investing into some kind of preamp if you don't have it on your soundcard (or you don't like the preamp on it), you can go for presonus or art cheapies, golden age pre 73, which is awesome and still reasonably cheap, or some other thing, again, Yade will probably recommend Mindstrip envoice (which is not that expensive, but is a complete channel strip, which means you get previously mentioned preamp-compressor-eq in one box, and it has toobez, which you will find out eventually is a pretty big thing)

Wow! Thanks a lot good sir! This was very helpful and informative. I didn't see a single bad review or comment on the above mentioned equipment, though I couldn't find anything containing the "Mindstrip Envoice". I'll most defintely take your options into consideration though ^^ By the way, is there a specific set of speakers you would reccommend as well? (again, reasonable price).

  5. yade's productions do sound top notch.. and he knows a lot

but he has deep pockets and owns an origin(dislike) and a tb303(envious)

you gotta take the good with the bad and be thankful

@Soillodge Haha I can see where you're getting from after viewing some of the other posts that he's commented on xD Lol. And I agree, he's definately hands down (or up) a cool and interesting character =D

@Tsarik Very true! I suppose it all comes down to the old saying "buy one shovel not six" as you get what you pay for in all honesty. I agree, you can just tell by the sound that he knows what he's doing, as well as having top notch equipment like you had mentioned. Yade's music is very proficient, especially his new remastered versions of his "Front Line Reports" album, which I found even more catchy and edgey than the origionals ^^

    LOL...

if you want follow the live/studio approach...I'd use a Beta87 or Beta58 instead of the proposed SM58...yes it costs a bit more...but not too much and imho has a clearer structure than the SM58....

so this I guess would be a solution between low- and mid-range :-)..

and for the plugins...well if you use Ableton, check out the built-in vocoder plugin and use the preset noisy as a base to work on....generally any vocoder (I guess most of the DAWs have a built in) with a white noise source works as a basis...

but as also quite often discussed in here, there are several approaches how to achieve these vocals...some do distrort more, others do pitch-shift etc....

a plugin-free approach which works is to record the vocals at say 44.1KHz and then change with for instance audacity or any other Waveform editor the samplerate to 22.1KHz or so and re-import the audio again...this adds more grittyness.....experiment with ranges between 32KHz and let's say 18KHz samplerate....below that point it gets too messy and you don't understand any lyrics at all

  8. You've probably decided what mic you're going for by now but I thought I'd comment as I bought a coles 4104 commentators microphone off ebay (it was cheap because of cosmetic damage) and I've found it amazing as a scream/shout mic, it's noise cancelling means you can add (compared to a normal ) insane amounts of distortion to it live and not worry too much about feedback, also you look like a boss onstage with that ugly brown hunk of metal. It looks very 'industrial'. Just throwing another idea out there, I've found it a worthy investment!

  9. Just checked the specs for coles 4101 on the website, it even says it itself:

"Equally important is its application in noisy industrial environments"

I laughed so hard, it's as if they knew!!
