    How's it going, folks?

I just wanted to express my feeling of frustration regarding piracy Vs. purchasing. Firstly, I'll just mention a few albums I've pre-ordered within the past month or so:

    Wayne Static - Pighammer (amazon)
Skinny Puppy - Handover (storming the base)
Angelspit - Hello My Name Is.. (Black Pill Red Pill Store)
Evanescence - Evanescence deluxe version (official webstore)

There are a few more which have gone past release date, so I'll just leave the list as it is.

So, enter Alan's frustration: Yoink, hello! Arrrggghhhh!!! Gggrrrrr!!!

All of the above have leaked. People who haven't paid a cent get to hear the music before those who have actually paid for it. There's an element of why do I bother paying when I can get it for free a month before its out.

I just find this so annoying and yeah, a little frustrating. I know of people who simply don't pay for music at all anymore who have heard these albums before me, someone who forked out their money to enter into a legitimate transaction with the artist/retailer.

I'm not really sure what I want to get out of this thread, perhaps a sympathetic ear, words of solidarity etc. Of course there are people here to pirate music, but I know there are also connoisseurs of music present, fellow purchasers, real fans.

I find it hard to understand how someone can express their love for music, call them-self a fan of a band and never have bought any of their music.

    Illegal downloading is blatant thievery.

I'm not gonna say I'm oh so holier than thou, but I do pay for the vast majority of my music.

  2. I'll just speak to one aspect of your post. In this day and age, the idea of "advanced promos" is just asking for it. Any artist that does advanced promos pretty much deserves to get screwed. That idea should have died 10 years ago.

    Illegal downloading.

Hmm...I wasn't aware of this phenomenon.

Have we ever discussed this on Side-Line in the past at some point?

With regard to advanced promos, I requested one for Handover and another for Miserylab's latest 'Void of Life' and leaked neither, despite numerous requests from "fans". An artist doesn't have to be automatically screwed by sending them out if the person who gets them has the integrity to not upload what they've been sent. Obviously, someone wanted to impress their online "friends" by fucking Puppy over in this way. There is such an incessant need by so many to feel as though they're important...

Pathetic that they rip off the artists who trust them to do so.

I'm fairly certain a member of the press leaked Puppy, SPV's been more than generous with promotional copies of it. All I'll say is: whoever you are, you're a rancid piece of dog shit who makes all of us in the press suspect and destroys whatever chance a band has to make any money whatsoever; thanks to your insecurity it becomes more and more likely that promos will become extinct and smaller labels will drop like flies. Die in a fire.

Have we ever discussed this on Side-Line in the past at some point?

    I think not good sir.

We've discussed many things here including a certain jewish hipster getting her cinnamon ring licked by a freemason but I certainly believe that illegal downloading is a new phenomena that is very underground at the moment.

Have you heard of Napster? Yeah, didn't think so.

nah man, I don't lose sleep over it haha its just a little annoying, that's all, seeing all the leaks while I'm waiting for the postman! :)

I'd also like to mention Deathwatch Asia's current strategy of offering a high quality download available as soon as you purchase a CD. Pretty good.

    "white whine" ha good one!

I am always amazed that people who complain about illegal downloading and the evils that go with it know exactly where to go to find that illegal site hosting the music.

Not pointing fingers to the thread creator. There have been many of these threads and they all for the most part have the poster telling us they noticed where music is to be downloaded illegally.

I am always on the internet and I have never stumbled upon one of the sites. You say what you want, but the bottom line in my opinion is, if you found it you were looking for it.

  12. Alan, I've pretty much sworn off being a dick... but you are a fucking twat.

how the fuck are you seeing everything that has been leaked early if you don't frequent all the same places that pirates do

but yeah.. carry on.. pat yourself on the back because you bought a CD

labels offering HQ downloads for people who order CDs, available immediately, is totally awesome.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  14. @holloway, yeah but that doesn't work well for pre-orders.

The new Skinny is out October 25th (see: http://www.stormingthebase.com/skinny-puppy-handover/ ) so it's not passed release date, though maybe i'm misreading your point.

Do most press people here receive watermarked promos?

Wow, some harsh comments there. Yay!

Tsarik's having a bad day apparently, cheer up old pal! If you want I can list a whole load of sites for you. Retardness evidently decreases internet savvy. Man up and change your diaper, kiddo.

  16. Ladies, ladies... can't we settle this with pistols?

The truth is, it DOES piss some people off and frustrate them that they wait to do the right thing while others can enjoy something sooner for free that THEY paid for. Especially if the person doesn't have a whole lot of money, which in these times, most of us don't. I can see why some people might just give in and download stuff for free in the end.

My stance on it is this: piracy IS stealing. When you take something that is for sale without paying for it, it's stealing. That's it. REGARDLESS of how you got it. Anyone who tries to say it's not stealing is someone who either can't understand the definition of the word "stealing" or simply wants to feel better about doing it. If people are going to do it and they are OK with doing it, then it's whatever. That's on them. But don't try to say it isn't what it is. If you are going to do it and be OK with it, then own it. Don't try to make yourself feel better with weak justifications of "Well, yeah TECHNICALLY it's stealing but it's really not because blah blah blah." That's all I'm saying.

What gets me as a musician is people who tell you right to your face that they pirated your stuff, like it's no big deal. And I guess to them it isn't. Or maybe they think musicians don't mind or something, I don't know. If it was me and I pirated someone's stuff, I certainly would not tell them, "Hey, I downloaded your music instead of buying it." Making music costs money. The shit ain't free to make and it ain't free to put out. You would think if people like the music - which they must, if they are pirating it - they would want to support it so more music can be made but some people just don't think that way. Or maybe they just don't care.

In the end, pirating exists. People are going to do it. I don't get all up on the soapbox about it because it would do no good. People believe they are entitled to something just because they want it and they can make up the sweetest-smelling justifications in the world for why it's OK. The thing that bothers me is, as I said, when people refuse to call it what it is.

/as in i don't have any fucking kids

but you know what fucking pisses me off... paying child support every month.. when so many other assholes don't

    or

hey.. at least i'm not like those other dickheads... i pay my child support

    ..

the point being. you don't congratulate yourself for doing shit you are fucking supposed to do, nor do you let the shitty actions of others cheapen or degrade your decisions

    ..

but carry on. give us a diatribe about how piracy is bad and how you don't understand how people do it yet consider themselves a fan... and then close your asinine post by telling everyone you fucking steal music too. genius

so black and white in this thread.

is light grey not better than black?
jesus. At least he pays for most.

Times are changing, deal with it.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  19. @Cult: In a way it IS black and white because... it's stealing. There is no grey area there. Is stealing less often better than stealing more often? Of course it is. I don't demonize people who do it. What good would that do? It ain't the crime of the century or anything. But in the context of your question: no, there is no grey area here. You either paid for it or you stole it.

And by the way? It's pretty easy to say "Get over it" or "Deal with it" when YOU aren't the one getting ripped off.
