humility is a good thing

(30 posts)

  1. This flyer is humbling, seeing as how we're the last ones mentioned. And I don't know why they put a space in our name. But either way, looking forward to playing and seeing some other great bands.

vnv get higher billing than Alien Sex Fiend, Dive, Yelworc AND Skinny Puppy? Pop music has taken over. Atrocious. Poor Anne-Marie, good to see she's still about the cabin.

  4. Waregem is a very nice festival, we played there three years ago, it was a cool moment. Drank too much, missed all the other bands except Nitzer Ebb, who were fucking brilliant... I would go for Skinny Puppy and ASF if I wasn't on tour at the same time :((

  5. @ Bubba - VNV are hugely popular. The only other band you mentioned who even come close in terms of popularity are Skinny Puppy. The other bands are niche at best. In fact I'm pretty sure very few people outside of hardcore industrial enthusiasts will know who the fuck Dive or Yelworc are.
And at the end of the day it's a case of cold, hard economics, because most of these festivals have a real job just breaking even. If they can snare a 'pop' act or two then fantastic. Loads of people come to see big band, loads of tickets bought, hosting the festival is made feasible next time round. Everyone wins!

@ rogue: mediocrity rules. This whole popularity contest amongst bands needs to stop. Juvenile bullshit is what it is.

  8. @ bubba - It's not a 'popularity contest'. As I said, it's economics on the part of the event organizers. To be quite honest I was surprised to see Alien Sex Fiend quite so high up the billing, and Faderhead so low down. Do you honestly think the legions of casual listeners and trendy cybergoths are going to look at the flyer and go "YELWORC ARE PLAYING!! FUCK YEAH!!"? No of course not. And these people, in spite of not necessarily being passionate enthusiasts, still make up a sizeable proportion of any given festival. You lose those people, more than likely, you lose the festival.

As nice as it would be if we could run this whole scene on meritocracy, unfortunately, money still dictates these matters, and these 'pop' bands like VNV bring in the money. Hence, they get preferential treatment, and until some smart person manages to change the rules of economics, that is never going to change.

Economics dictating creative expression, absolutely revolting. Another trademark of pop music and popular culture.

  10. It's not a trademark of pop music. It's a trademark of a capitalist society, which, like it or not, we all live in.
And bear in mind that of course there are smaller festivals that cater much more for niche tastes and manage to stay afloat, i.e. Maschinenfest and Familientreffen. Of course, these festivals are on a smaller scale for sure, but that's the tradeoff.

I see this flyer as giving equal billing (=text size) to VNV Nation, Skinny Puppy and Alien Sex Fiend, and I think that's the smartest way to do it too. Make the headliners the biggest EBM/futurepop band, the biggest industrial band, and the biggest goth band on your list, and your flyer is appealing to all three of those scenes. You don't need your second-biggest industrial band in the top 3.

Niche tastes... this is taking me back to my marketing classes in college. They sickened me then and the concept disgusts me now. Everything becomes a monetary consideration.

  13. If the concept sickens you so much, try running your own festival that doesn't abide by these conditions. I can pretty-much guarantee you'll be out-of-pocket straightaway. If you're prepared to make that kind of sacrifice for the bands you love, then that's awesome, but I bet you'll be singing a different tune when you've maxed-out your overdraft and trying to repay a loan of several hundreds of thousands of Euros.

My my aren't we worked up. Marketing major? Insofar as putting on a festival of my own, I have no interest in it. The mediocrity still is shit, the banality is no excuse. If you like it so much, do enjoy.

  15. No, you don't need a major in marketing to understand that putting on a festival costs a shitload of money.
And no, I'm not worked up, but I do find your take on this whole situation to be rather shortsighted and fallacious. But whatever. If you have no interest in making change, you have no reason to complain when you don't get your way.

Stating my opinion, your usage of .25c words will not change anything. Keep condescending.

I'm kind of curious how else one would set the order of bands at a festival other than based on popularity.

    Shots for all !

This fest looks really GOTHIC to me. All (except ASF) the headliners are industrial/ebm/synthpop in nature....looks like gay eyeliner wearing gothic poofs are still trying to attach themselves onto a music that's not completely dead like goth is.
