  1. -> what does it mean to you when a band puts out a video? (I mean a REAL effort, not just copy/paste from a movie or random pics)
-> is it added value or is this scene not big enough to support the investment (in either time/money)?
-> do you care, or do you rather like to HEAR?
-> does the video has to deal with a theme or reference the song or can it just be random shots?

I'd like to know, because recently some cool videos turned up in our scene. And I really like that. I like the effort that is being made etc.. etc..

  2. as to the first question:
I'll buy an album if the video is good. No question. Chances are good I'll end up with buyers remorse in a few years but what can you do. That's why I sell used CDs.

Conversely, if the "hit single" video's bad and the song isn't the best one on the album, it might give me pause on buying the album, I don't deny it. First impressions and all.
and of course, I'd buy the album when I like the music but not the video.

    the second question:
yes I care, I love videos - when they're good. When it's some fan made stuff I'm not interested. I bought FLA's Live Wired just for the music videos. Some other videos I enjoyed are Covenant's Bullet, Hocico's Drowning, Filter & Crystal Method's Trip Like I Do. There aren't too many videos I liked in industrial music, sadly.

    third question:
I've always preferred the theme of the video to be related to the theme of the song and/or lyrics. if it's some kind of unrelated story, I usually don't like it unless the production levels are very high; for example it would be so well done that the music video director later becomes a movie director. also I've seen videos that are just abstractions and stuff like that, for example gridspace (headscan) or the backing videos for groups that use original material similar to demoscene stuff.

  3. For me, a video can make a song but it can't break one.

It isn't so much about theme or not, just whether it is interesting and visually appealing. I despise the trend of the past 15 years of making videos of rotting meat with maggots and blood covered walls. Never watch those. Also, something has to be happening. Changing scenes, something, anything. Quality of vid is not important at all to me unless the bad quality is distracting.

a video on YouTube can really help to spread the band to new ears. I think its worth it the time & investment. You dont need to spend alot of $ to get a good video done. Just find creative people who are motivated to help out.

for the record, Im helping a fellow Side-Liner to shoot & put together a video in November on a near 0 budget. Im going to do everything I can to make it look as professional as it can with no money invested. My payment will be to have a kick ass portfolio piece. Hope to be sharing it with everyone early next year.

as we are on the subject. did everybody watch the haujobb video? was that good or bad promotion for the single? did it make you listen to the release?

  7. In this era and the state of the music industry, videos are imperative to promotions. A well done video=even with a budget shows me that you care enough about what you are doing to present it in a professional manner. The content of the film itself will make a great difference to me on whether I pay attention and buy your release. I bought Miami Horror and O Children last year mainly based upon the videos that introduced me to them.

As for the theme- I prefer abstraction to a literal translation. Funny that Daniel is looking for feedback, because what they did is exactly what I like to see. A video that is very relevant to the music, but not obvious or self-indulgant. I do not like to see club songs with videos of people in the club posing like they are bigger than shit. I would rather see a club song video be some race cars that crash into each other-turn into robots and start a wicked dance off. Something clever and exciting. Does not need to be high cost. Cut some paper and do it South Park style. Just do something clever. Those two recent Goyte videos are awesome for example. I love that Foriegn Beggars video where they are in the cardboard boxes in front of a green screen. So great!

Coincidently, I want to put together 1 or 2 promotional videos for R010R. So if anyone out there wants to collaborate and make some art, please send them my way :D

Generally speaking, I think 'scene' bands who make videos hurt themselves more than help themselves due to 99.99999% of EVERY video they churn out being so dreadfully bad, cliche & cheesy that they're almost embarrassing to even watch. Between all the blood, anti-religious imagery, fetish this & domination that, mutilation (usually self), plastic guns & rubber knives, electrical tape, standing on podiums in front of crowds, "rocking out" on unplugged keyboards while pressing the keys ever so aggressively, trying to mimic 90's era Marylin Manson "move body parts really fast!" imagery, knee high combat boots, YouTube ripped footage of war (specifically WWI) imagery and Nazis marching, inserting political speeches or statements from Bush and/or foreign dictators, avoiding swinging lightbulbs in dark rooms with blood on the walls, girls kissing each other like it's still a taboo thing, crawling on floors all creepy-like towards the camera, white flash editing, etc etc etc etc etc etc... scene videos are as trite, predictable, lame, wannabe 'alternative' or 'edgy', unmemorable, cliche & rehashed as most of the scene music has become. And what's really unnerving is how many people say shit like "great video!" when this visual vomit is uploaded for viewing, especially when I can count on one hand - personally speaking - how many were actually GOOD or at least sort of unique or clever.

videos were cool 15 years + ago before every dork had a MAC. Hey I made a video using my iPhone at lunch. I have an app to make videos.

I have zero interest in any visual a band can make. Maybe a few exceptions.

I would have interest in live video if I was at the show.

I really like some of R3mote's responses about them being good video's and trying to stay close to the lyrics. I'm sure you have already seen the new (recent) 16volt video for the track "Burn" It's an amazing video and even more so when you go to the 16volt website and read about what Eric Powell had to say about making it. It's enough to bring a man to tears...sorry if this is a little OT but I really think the video should be seen.

Most of my vids have been DIY, but i am really looking for anyone who can make a "polished" one (which means a little more editing and techie) for new unreleased BentWithLight stuff. There is one that i really want to release. The person would be sent an mp3 of the track and basically if you liked the song and could put in the time that would be the only stipulation. It is all about the song, bottom line.
I am pretty sure i can provide some AVI's since i like the aspect of DIY/underground, but with a little more twisted edge.
It is always damned if you do, damned if you don't, but this is the latest i did basically more trying to get the idea across than trying to "compete", and it was more of a function of promo for gigs on my page, to give an idea of my sound.
