Harper Majority?

So, let me get this straight: the Harper minority is brought down after lying to Parliament, and gets re-elected with a majority?

I am so glad I won't be back in Canada for at least the next 3 years. I shudder to think what my country will look like once the Harperists are through with it.

I like how people overreact to stuff like that...

Here's what came out positive about last time:

    1. The outdated Bloc got the boot

    2. The Liberals hopefully will hear the lesson that (as sad as it may be) people don't vote for competent intellectuals, they vote for populists.

    3. Surely I would have prefered the Conservatives not to win but our country was in dire need of a government with a clear mandate and room to apply its politics.

    4. All parties in Canada are very much ''center'', even the conservatives. It's not like any of them is threatening Canada.

    5. I wouldn't vote for them but It's good that the Green party got someone elected for the first time, just to bring the big shots a reminder that environmental issues are important.

I think as a whole Canada is better after this election... and so is Quebec.

We do have elections, they are needlessly convoluted and quite frequent actually.

    @djtekslave:

Normally I would agree that it doesn't really matter who is holding the reigns, but Harper's Conservatives are a special case in my view.

This is the guy whose party tried to bribe a dying man to change his vote, who have violated election spending rules, who overpaid for stealth fighters and refuse to address it, who seem unable to understand why an MP changing a document to mean its intended opposite by writing "not" on it and then lying about it is a big deal, who have used quotes by the Auditor General regarding another party and claimed they were about the Conservatives, who repeatedly proroged parliament to avoid disputes, and - let us not forget - were the first government in the history of the Commonwealth to have been found in contempt of Parliament.

These are just the things off the top of my head.

These guys are NOT COOL. And now they are free to do whatever they want, as with a majority government the opposition is fairly toothless. Plus upcoming vacancies in the Supreme Court they have to fill, as well as replacing the Auditor General (presumably with someone who will not be as forthright in their reports of the government's doings). After already stacking the Senate (the one he promised to reform to avoid such a thing, remember that?), this could be a scary few years ahead.

All parties do horrible stuff, yet they are the ones at the head of our country. You could find equal numbers of instances for the liberals, even the NDP and the Bloc in their local districts.

To be quite frank I am a Liberal but I am not scared in the least by the Harper government. All 3 parties could have won it wouldn't do that much of a difference in the end.

Protip: The NDP have balanced more budgets during NDP governments municipally and provincially than any other political party.

In terms of image, I believe the NDP would benefit to distance themselves a bit from vocal union leaders. Unions have bad press these days in Quebec, especially in the construction industry.
