@dogmeat: the Rhodes is one of those instruments some people really bond with, like a favorite guitar. i never thot much of them til i ran into one playing with a shoegaze band at a college party gig a few years back. i threw my synth on top of it & started playing both. totally fell in love with the thing. went out & got myself one asap. for me it was something about the tone & the feel of it. i like the roundness of the tonebars, the keys have a unique feel - not as firm as piano & not as loose as synths, & they take effects really well.

  12. Ok. I'll bite. Here are some shots from the past 12 years. I tend to go through pretty drastic equipment changes. I tend to get in a routine of buying stuff till the studio gets filled up like crazy then I get rid of tons of stuff, stripping down to what I actually need. Right now I'm in a very minimal set up, and hopefully I can keep it this way as I find it way more productive....but gear lust often gets the better of me.

so yea, a few shots from the past 12 years, from 3 different houses.

    Current (sorry shitty iphone pic)

From about 2006-2009 (this is when I started to go a little crazy buying stuff. I think I went through 5 different sets of near field monitors til I found what I liked. I also did a lot of computer and computer monitor swapping. Not to mention the constant stream of different VA synths coming in and out)

This was back during the "REREDROOM RECORDINGS" days (2004-2006)...this is where Burning Heaven was recorded...gross basement room, but it was my oasis for a long time

    http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll278/jpillipow/IMG_0030.jpg

And now as far back as I could find a picture for, 1999. This was my first "studio". Where I recorded my demo and pretty much learned how to do things....also the last place I was able to smoke in the studio, which I sort of miss, but I'm sure my gear doesnt.

i don't monitor out of the PC speakers... but i'd probably receive the same amount of flak for monitoring out of PC speakers as i do for monitoring with the roland KC-550 behind my computer

i've still got a ton to learn about sound design and writing music until i worry about recording it well.. so i'll keep buying toys that are fun to use until i think i don't such so hard as to actually need monitors

    gear list:

bitching gaming PC.. that i rarely play games on anymore... so more DAW Power!

Studiologic (fatar) - VMK176+ wighted hammer action keyboard

modules in ghetto tech enclosure.. doepfer dual attenuators and multiples

    Waldorf - Microwave XT

    Eventide Eclipse

    Future Retro - XS

Tom Oberheim - Patch Panel SEM

Flight of Harmony - Quad Plague Bearer

    glass of jug wine

    Roland KC-550

    Allen & Heath - ZED14

software used is Reaper(DAW), Battery3(percussion sampler), Valhalla DSP - Freqecho (fx), Cyclomic - The Glue (compression)

hopefully some day soon i'll be able to devote the time to learning some theory for both synthesis and writing music... until then i just twist knobs and have fun

  15. @Tsarik yea, I've spent the last year really deciding what I do and don't need. Before I used to get so caught up in just playing with gear that I would never get anything done. I find having that many synths sort of counter productive. I find that if I have to many sound sources available I have a much harder time committing to a sound, it's like in my head I always think there is a better sound just waiting to be found and I never end up recording anything. Now I'm down to 3 hardware synths and only about 5 vsts that I actually use. I find this super helpful, especially since it allows me to actually learn how to get what I want out of each synth.

also you have some seriously awesome hardware there so get going on learning music. seriously put that oberheim and future retro to some good use that I can hear! :)

that distortedmemory1.jpg is a great shot. nice ghost image & glow from the synths & screen. looks like a fun space to create noise in. what is that black piece of gear with the red lights in front of the 2 screens?

  17. that's a virus C which is one of the few constants in my studio, even though i havn't used it on a recording in ages. you can see it along with it's friend the ti in pretty much every location possible throughout those shots.
