  2. Awesome man, tidy and effective. I need to clean up the soillodge before I bother taking any pics.

I see your little "industrial lyric making device" there on the metal side wall. Ingenious! :D

  6. @Dodd: Do all those Electribes really sound that different from one another? I've never messed around with one, so I wouldn't know. I just figured each new one was an upgrade of the previous one.

    @Tsarik: Are those rubber duckies?

I'll take a pic this weekend if I remember.

    @ herectic909

Yes. The Blue one (EA-1) is an analog synth (also the poor man's TB303).

The red one (ER-1) is a drum synth. The green one (ES-1) is sampler and the black one (EM-1) is a groovebox.

I got rid of the EM-1 and ES-1 and bought the upgrades EMX-1 and ESX-1

It's a very destructive 8-bit pedal. Hook up that fucker to a drum machine and you can get some wicked sounds.

  12. haha. yeah is a devil duck and the other is a glow in the dark zombie duck with brains exposed.

theres a little glass blue duck to the left of those and the rest of the stuff is McFarlan Toys stuff like Giger's Li, Leatherface, Jason and if you look at the midi in cable on the Future Retro XS there is a lil Freddy Kruger

@ Tsarik, quite nice... friends of mine have the XT and Eclipse respectively and they're both wonderful.

How would you say you're finding the FR XS? Every review I read raves about its depth and range (in terms of filter types, modulation possibilities etc) but every audio demo I've heard has been severely underwhelming. Maybe I need to get my hands on one and hear first-up.*

*Possibly not in a music store, though. My ears do funny things in music stores where every synth sounds samey... I'm sure this is psychological.

  16. the XS is still my favorite. i just picked up the XT after wanting one for a long time. I'm still exploring the XT but even with the novelty of the XT... I'm drawn back to the XS.

programming the XS has changed since I've owned it. i guess I was the one that changed. i really gelled with this synth. The FR XS does have a huge range and depth of sound, I also think it sounds fairly unique.

a lot of people think the XS can only do aggressive sounds. it excels at them, but does so with a 2 pole filter. the more traditional moog 4 pole filter always souned more aggressive to me than a vintage oberheim 2 pole. so i think the XS's 2 pole filter is pretty unique. the multimode filter is damned useful too. I use every type but my favorites are the LP and BP.

the XS doesn't have to sound aggressive though. the Oscillators are capable of over-driving the filter input... so if you're using 1 oscillator only... if you wanted a more vintage tone I wouldn't set the lone osc's level in the Mixer past the 1 or 2 O'clock position. if using 2 oscillators I wouldn't set either's level in the mixer past the 10 O'clock position.

not only can the oscillators overdrive the filter but the filter itself has overdrive.
its such a beautiful over-drive too... it really shines when you're only using 1 oscillator, adding warm, fuzzy harmonics. using too much over-drive with more than 1 oscillator can muddy up the sound because there's too many frequencies present.

so in my opinion the FR XS isn't only capable of warm vintage sounds but also very cutting and modern sounding too.

it can have a very massive sound too. you'll have to program in intentionally to narrow its sound if you're wanting to have other synths audible in the same track. or you can just let the XS take center stage.

my very favorite thing about the FR XS.. besides the hands on immediacy of analog potentiometers (all 43 of them and 3 switches too!) is the FR XS's modulation capabilities and semi-modular ability. This is definitely a sound designer's synth but laid out in an intuitive and traditional manner so even someone with a rudimentary understanding of subtractive synthesis can jump in and start having fun.

i could ramble all day about the glories of Future Retro and their synthesizers, especially the XS. Jared, the owner of FR is also one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Customer service is another great thing about Future Retro.. you'll never regret dealing with them.

enough idle chat though. i have a soundclick where every single sound is made by the XS + FX from the eclipse.

    www.soundclick.com/linearaggression

my recording and production probably suck. I've yet to actively pursue learning the things necessary for better recordings and productions... at the moment i just want to program synths and play them.. i'll get into proper production techniques later

Well, I can't fault your recording, and I do like how the Eclipse puts a little sparkle on analogue synths. Your patches are very buzzy, it'd be nice to imagine XT parts over them.

That said, ah, I'm getting the same vibe off this synth. Odd because I've heard it compared to an Obie or an MS-20 because of the switchable filters, but it doesn't seem like it whirs and pops in the same way without a fair bit of snap. Yes, I just said that :D

    Posted 1 year ago #
  18. its oscillators are fully voltage controlled but incredibly stable so to get some vintage analog whir takes proper programming.

i like buzzy sounds. i grew up listening to Metal in the 80's and early 90's until I discovered skinny puppy in 92. so that might have something to do with my love of crunchy sounds.

i'll upload some of the other sounds I like to make on the XS.. like a simple single pulse osc with some pwm via lfo.
