  1. getting the studio set up is driving me fucking bonkers

first, i tried sequencing my synths with a new usb to midi cable i bought using reaper... it was sending data but shit was going crazy.. like no note offs or something

i tried a diff usb port even though all of em are 2.0 and got it work... for sequencing.. SoundDiver the program i used to edit wavetables is still not working or communicating nicely... which it did with other interfaces

but now a i notice a new problem... my mixer sends audio into my pc via usb.... whenever i have the usb to midi cable plugged in reaper only sees audio coming in from 1 side... not the full stereo that it should... pull the usb to midi out.. restart repear and it records in stereo properly

    fucking computers man

anyone have any ideas of what is wrong.. how to fix... or have any suggestions in general i'd appreciate it

i hear ya, isn't it time for a new protocol? usb to midi has been so buggy for me that i walked away from it. the computer is my multitrack recorder & i capture performances as they happen. good luck!

I know why I do relate on traditional protocol types made for music like ADAT,SPDIF etc...

these USB interface are always a bit suspect to me...

but personally I think this is either a driver problem or Reaper has a bug....ever tried to record it manually?

  4. reaper records fine. i'll probably try another midi interface and if that gives me trouble I'll do what metaball does

its definitely the usb crap that is doing it

@Tsarik: maybe you can borrow a MIDI Interface to test if it is the cable or your motherboard....mine is terrible when it comes to USB...my KORE works only on one of 9 USB ports, my Origin cannot be connected via USB to this computer...when I update or connect it to my laptops it works perfectly immediately....

if it is the motherboard I'd suggest to exchange the mixer with one that has integrated MIDI,

if it is the cable, I'd get a cheap MIDI Interface like a MidiSport 2x2 or so..

    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MIDISPORT2x2.html

these are pretty cheap and do their job pretty well...we use one of these usually when we are doing live soundengineering, to adjust the delay tempi to the bpm of the songs...

  8. the 1010LT was able to transmit midi and sysex just fine... but that connected to a pci slot... i wonder if there are inherent problems with midi over usb? and like you.. some of my ports did weird shit

with the exception of being unable to edit my microwave XT's wavetables... these midi troubles have reminded me of something I had forgotten... and that is that i don't want to sequence stuff... i want to develop my actual keyboard skills... but sequencing is just so damned fun... especially doing really fast sequences with the FR XS because it's envelopes are lightning fast

i also like running a sequence when i'm programming the XS.. i've come up with sounds that i didn't before when just using my keyboard

i'm sure i'll get this figured out... from all my reading it seems like these types of problems arise from time to time in people's studios

  9. I had all these problems (buffer-glitches, sync-errors, MIDI dropout, random disconnects, shit just disappearing for no explicable reason) with my old USB interface until I switched to a Firewire interface. Everything has been peachy since. Problem is, USB's bitrate can vary wildly, which as you can imagine when you're firing multiple channels of high-bandwidth audio across the bus, causes problems. Firewire on the other hand, is throttled to a constant 400/800mbps, which inherently gives it an advantage when dealing with streaming data.

So yeah, to answer your question, there ARE inherent problems with USB and audio. Go Firewire. You will not regret it :)

  10. sweet. i've got firewire ports too.

did you get a midi only interface that connects via firewire? all i need is midi conectivity

  11. Nah man. Unfortunately most seem to be audio/MIDI combo cards :(

  12. yeah.. i figured firewire would be overkill for midi

just got the allen and heath zed 14 so i wont be getting another audio interface

no big deal with the midi though... i programmed some drums in battery and my brother came over with his guitar and we rocked out... i don't know but i think just playing the keys is easier.. i can come up with stuff off the top of my head almost without thought.. just pick a scale and let it rip.. i like the sound when i actually play too.. i guess because i use rests more often

midi is sweet though for really fast shit that i'm no where near capable of playing yet... and there is something about the tight perfectly in time notes... but i also think there is something about loose playing as well

i'll do both but i'm not overly concerned about the midi woes for sequencing so much... i would like to edit the microwave XT without headaches though

well MIDI makes sense as soon as a computer-aided part sets in...the Computer, unless a humand musician cannot vary the tempo to fit the slight differences 99% of all of us make while playing....

for some reason tsarik I have this mental image in my head of you and being a musician being impossible.

  15. am i like the anti-musician? my music sucks the melody out of life

with your mental image of me... what am i capable of... if music is out of the question.. i need to know what direction i should go in

    become a goth-hooker pimp :-)

  17. i can't imagine being a goth hooker pimp being much fun... i mean.. regular a regular ho is dirty enough... now put that dirty ho in pvc and rubber fetish attire and you're going to have one truly rancid ho

i think i'll stick to accountant, with music as a hobby. if you think about it.. an accountant has more opportunities for real government affecting anarchy than any anarchist... i know how to hit em where it truly hurts.. the pocket book.. and i can do this while being 100% ethical
