    http://www.amphi-festival.de/2010/newtalents.html

I am really wondering when the first labels will start selling their artists' slots over Ebay...

everyone is always complaining about the degeneration of the scene and the devaluation of music etc etc...

I mean "World premiere" (which literally just means "this band never has played any livegig before") slots at WGT while bands which exist for several years and do a good job and are pretty successful will not be allowed to play there (i am not speaking about YADE!) is a thing I always found pretty pathetic...but what Orkus now does with the amphi slot (which first lets the bands pay and then also the audience because this is the selection criteria which band will open the festival...the one who collected the most money!!!) is imho a sheer disgrace of the art we as artists put into our music...in fact this means I could form a white pride combo, win the auction and then this provides me a 30min slot where I can rant about the Jews, the Black,Osama Bin Laden or whoever I want to....

this makes me feel very sick...fuck you ORKUS!

hm, it seems you didn´t read the participation requirements ?!
    it says:
"a music style that is compatible to the Amphi Festival (i.e. Gothic, Electronic, Middle Ages, etc….)!"
and believe it or not: but a "white pride combo" or something similar is not even close to be a compatible style to the amphi festival !

maybe you better doublecheck all the infos about this "new talents special" ?!

this contest will take place additional to the regular festival line-up.
all other 36 performing artists will get their regular fee (and sometimes even more) ;)
so there is no reason to worry, that there will be a "degeneration of the scene and devaluation of music" with this additional contest !

btw: the first slot auction finished with 500 euro, of which 250 euro will be donated to the "dunkelziffer e.v." (an association that supports victims of sexual abuse).

but sometimes people are feeling better just to say "fuck you" to something ;)

wait...you are basically making bands PAY YOU??? as in THE FESTIVAL gets paid??? and not big names which, hardly, but still...live from their music, but small first time bands???? oh, and if HALF of what you take from burger flipping amateurs goes to charity it is somehow ok??? you know the whole invest in your future, he who dares wins...why dont you sell them some nigerian black money instead??? 500 is a lot of money just to have the privilege to compete...

  7. I've already seen enough of this shit on the VF forums tonight. Sure, half the money is going to charity. Cool beans. Where's the other half going? To line the promoter's pockets apparently.
YADE is not the only band getting riled up by this pay-to-play bullshit.

Fuck this fucking scene. I feel perfectly fine saying "fuck you" to a lot of what the scene in Europe has to offer.
If the promoters had an inch of scrotum they would give ALL the money to charity.
Prying money out of bands who want to succeed is one thing. Trying to sugarcoat it with the pretense of charity is quite another.
Fucking robbing bastards. You deserve nothing but contempt.

Hey all you bands out there!

If you pay me $1000, you can perform in my apartment FOR ABSOLUTELY FREE!!

    Do the math. It's solid.

Also, you'll get a piece of mold from my basement and maybe a bunch of Bed, Bath, & Beyond coupons I have sitting around too or something.

    For realz!

  9. That's really garbage. While there's people that will try to take advantage of you in every scene it's up to the artists to finally call bullshit and walk away.

  10. "all other 36 performing artists will get their regular fee (and sometimes even more) ;)"

I think that line there pretty much embodies the entire shitty attitude at play here. Should small bands be grateful because they're not being charged over and above the base rate to play at a festival? That is absolute bullshit.

In a day and age where it's pretty-much impossible for even the biggest acts in a niche scene such as this to just break even, it's fucking appalling that this sort of attitude seems to prevail. Honestly, if this sort of thing carries on, bands WILL start to walk away, and with any justice, the new blood will forget about the whole status symbol of playing big Euro-festivals, and go tread their own path.

And hopefully, as gloriously ironic as it may be, Amphi may have inadvertently given the industrial scene the kick up the ass and imperative to start afresh that it so desperately needs. Well, with any luck...

    Will you accept pesos?

  13. “Where's the other half going? To line the promoter's pockets apparently.”

as mentioned before, this contest will take place in addition to the regular festival program.
the realization causes high extra costs, such as additional venue rental, additional p.a. & light rental,
catering, a lot of staff (artist host, security, technicans), etc.
there is no extra ticket income – visitors can join this event with their regular amphi ticket.
so the other half of the contest income will be used to cover a (small) part of these costs.
it is obvious, that the total extra costs are much higher than the contest income.
so yes, the promoter´s pockets are involved – but just to pay this balance (not to get extra income).

in general “pay to play” is no unusual practice. most headliner bands are asking for money
from their support-bands (to cover a part of the touring costs). it is a fair deal for both.
anyway, no band is forced to accept these conditions !
it is an optional offer, a rare chance to play in front of a huge crowd.
bands are free to decide if they want to play at black oil´s apartment (or somewhere else) instead ;)
in the past we got much higher direct offer´s from bands to play the opening slot, but we are sure
this contest is more fair - and also more attractive for the audience.

"in fact this means I could form a white pride combo, win the auction"

The funny part about your example, there's no honor in this scene, it's all full of lefty libs stabbing each other in the back.

so yes, the promoter´s pockets are involved – but just to pay this balance (not to get extra income)....as opposed to the regular pay_from_sold_tickets_&_sponsorships way????

"but sometimes people are feeling better just to say "fuck you" to something ;) " ...well amphi, you make it so easy to do so

wow, rubbing my eyes i had to countercheck the german version to verify what i've just read in english.

from a moral point of view the title of this event is close to fraud imho. not only doesn't talent matter but instead money decides which bands are allowed to perform on stage and in which order (sorted by amount of final bid). and additionaly money (donations from the audience after the gigs) decides which bands win also! how much more corrupted can art/ music get?

the gothic/whatever scene was an alternative music genre once. it is already part of the mainstrem music biz for some time now. amphi proves it yet again. there is no competition. not quality decides but wallets. pure capitalism.

    cy

    p.s.
oh, and taking a free ride on the trendy "sexual abuse"/"think of the children" wagon doesn't help here neither. on a closer look it's just a cheap PR stunt. based on "hidden costs" in expense of bands and fans.

  19. Yeah, as a sidenote, I'd be REALLY interested to see how the lineup for this eventually turns out.

I'm not a band, but I know ''some'' business, and it makes no sense to pay to play to huge crowd which going to run after the show to download for free your music.

Let's be serious here for a second.
