So i got facebook (yes, this late in the game), but I'm paranoid and I don't want employers / people i know but don't like / stalkers to be able to identify me easily so I used a different name and created a new email address that wasn't under my name. new email address is from a not very popular email address provided (think yahoo or something).

Anyway, Facebook seems intrusive at best. Its asking where I work, what school I went to and all that jazz, but most disturbingly its asking me to give them my password for my email so it can "find my friends for me". Yeah fucking right. Anyway eventually Facebook's telling me that its sent me all these confirmation emails which it has not, and eventually it gets mad and tells me that its not going to let me do things until i give it my password for my email. Fuck it, its fake, i don't care. So i give it the password and its happy...

...for a bit. Then its telling me I need to give it another email! Its telling me the email I gave it had a problem? I don't understand. Is it trying to scrooge all my personal details? Did it realise that my email was made like a day ago and under a second but also fake name? I'm getting so wigged now. Google is trying to control me. The machines are trying to put a barcode on me.

Am I right to be wigged out?

  2. All of this, is why I do not use Facefuck and refuse to deal with that company. People say it is necessary promotional kick, but I say the ends do not justify the means.

  3. I stayed it off it until this summer for those very reasons. Then finally made a FB but didnt use my real name and used my work info for all my home, etc info. Not that big a deal really.

I agree with Seraphin. I'm not saying it's perfect by far, but it's the best way to keep in contact with people overseas for sure. Some people don't even check their emails as religiously as they do with their facebook pages.

you can choose to block the bulk of your profile information & limit it to "friends".
there's no law that says you have to fill out everything. FB's goal is to get everyone on the planet on their site. the more info you give them the more people they try & link you to, the more data they have to mine & the more customers they can invite to their site. it's ok to say NO to anything yer not comfortable with.

Oh for fuck sakes. If you're too stupid to figure out the embarrassingly simplistic privacy settings that take all of 5 minutes to customize, give any more than the absolute bare minimum information required to set up an account (fake or real name, fake or real birth date and some random free email address to use for sign-up verification), then you got bigger problems than any so-called "privacy invasion" that Facebook is ever going to do to you. For a bunch of self proclaimed techy elitists, your inability to do what a 14 year old girl can do from her cell phone and Chicken Little paranoia about "the man" is hilariously ironic.

Facebook is a suckfest. I've overused facebook and now I regret it. The only slightly positive thing about is the page and group thing which I do use for various purposes. The band page stuff is quite popular. You know, you'll find all the popular industrial bands in there. And we have our pages, too:
    https://www.facebook.com/arizanesil
    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Malfunct/241867989170180

Although I think, in general, facebook is lame as hell so I'm trying to stay off it and usually hang out on google+ which seems to be less cluttered. I think it's ok to use it for music/band/promotion/event purposes but except that, it's a pit of apes. I pity the time I wasted on it.

Password for your own email? I've never heard of this. Sounds pretty dubious. Realistically though, there is direct proof that Facebook is nothing more than an intelligence gathering tool created with seed money from the NSA. Same with Google. Regardless, Facebook is just turning into just another version of MySpace except now with all your spam and flashing ads you get to see stupid pictures of peoples cats and updates when they get a coffee. Another thing I've noticed is just like with MySpace people are starting to farm friends as well.

Bottom line, I use it sparingly with only a small group of people I actually know so I can find out about shows & new music.

I really like Facebook. I've actually met alot of interesting people on there and i still am. You don't have to put all of your info on there that it asks for. It's a social network more than anything else. You will always have a certain amount of spam on any of these sites. If you are adept at web surfing you know what to look for and to avoid it. One thing i can say is do not use any of those apps. They seem really spammy and access all of your personal data to function. Facebook can be a big time waster if you let it. I don't understand people who sit on there and play those app games like Farmville. I like to keep up with what my friends are doing and then actually leave the house. Granted i drank too much last night but it was alot more fun than counting the turnips in my virtual farm.

@people getting angry and telling me to change my privacy settings

you missed the point. the website has asked me to give them the password to my personal email account. the issue is with the site's attempts to get personal information, not so much with people using it to stalk me.

    @Eric

    I agree with you most.

Maybe it asks for your password because you klicked on the "friend finder", or however it´s called. I´ve been told by many not to use it, because it requires personal data. So I didn´t.

  14. am i the only person in the world that has no problem with companies like fb, google, ect farming and storing information about me?

i find the internet a much less annoying place in the last few years since this has really started happening, fb and google always show me ads to things that are relevant to my life (music equipment, records, ect) and i think this is awesome. I really could care less if "the man" knows my name, address, phone number, employer...because guess what, they already do anyway, so if they know know my internet habits and the things i like it just means they can streamline their attempts to sell me shit, and i'm fine with that. they are going to try and sell me stuff constantly anyway, might as well be stuff i actually like.

  15. This porn/gore hack thing is what's bothering me. The gore is not so bad; I have a collection of crime scene photos on my PC and stuff like that. Some of it, though... I saw a picture of a little kid that was hacked to pieces. That is going a little far, in my opinion. But the "porn" is just really nasty stuff. Stuff NOBODY wants to see. Plus, sometimes my kids are sitting beside me when the shit comes up and I have to cover it real quick. I hope they get a handle on it soon.

PS: "...they are going to try and sell me stuff constantly anyway, might as well be stuff i actually like."

    True enough.

Facebook wants me to give it my phone number to activate the short hyperlink to my profile or something. Google tries the same shit too every so often when I log into gmail it tries getting me to enter my phone number so I can be "verified" via text message.

This is why I pay money for my own web domains. My websites that I build aren't collecting my personal data for some marketing division's expert system. And my email running on the server for my domains doesn't want my phone number and adding my correspondence to data warehouses.

The web was supposed to liberate us. Now that was a silly old sentiment looking back on it.

  17. "collecting my personal data for some marketing division's expert system"

again, i think this is a good thing, the more information about what i like, and information gathered from people with similar interests can/do tip the scales of how and what companies market. maybe if they farm enough data from people like me i will see less advertisements for garbage like nickelback, mcdonalds, glee, ect.

  18. ....you truly think about it like that? One example: The food industry...they all know that healthy food is needed to avoid diseases. And that is already known without facebook. It is all about money nothing else.

    Facebook IMHO is a plague.

    Posted 6 months ago #
  19. exactly, huge companies only care about money. not what is better. so the higher demand there is for things that i think are better, the more i will see it in the markets. today on fb i saw adds for dj furniture, leonard cohen merch, christopher hitchens books, vinyl record cleaning products, all stuff that i actually care about, how can i complain about that? they are trying to sell me stuff i want, instead of wasting time trying to sell me stuff i hate.

however, it's not something i really think about too much, i just think people are too paranoid about companies getting their "data". so facebook wants you to log into your email through their own site, who cares, if you dont want to give them that info and they want to get it, they will, they will just buy it from the email provider. they want you to use your cell phone to activate an account? who cares, if they really want info tied to your phone, they will, or already have, bought that info from your cell phone provider.

  20. You have also to watch out what posts you are commenting on or liking. If they are shared with "world" your post and of course name/surname will be searchable by google etc. A disaster if you want to keep your private life private.
