  3. Real DJs? No, they make for good _dance_ musicians since they know what their audience wants.

Scene DJs? You mean, those who have no clue what beatmatching is and still play Covenant and VNV songs from 2001? Enough said.

Yeah, those. Because they make up the entire scene, that's a fact.

  5. I beg to differ... there are several people in this scene that make up for good DJs.
Krischan from Rotersand is one, for instance. Thomas Rainer another.
    I could cite myself too.

Then of course, if we want to talk about Ext!ze or shit like that we can as well. A prime example of why the aforementioned people should not be given budget e promotion for a band.

well but it's the other way round they asked .... I think in this scene a lot of people with no skills are considering them as super-DJs (<irony>Beatmatching is overrated anyways *G*...and besides this it's techno...and we don't want to be techno...we are different...</irony>)...and unfortunately a lot of these after some times start to think they need a music project as well.....

I think the "real DJs" you mention know what the crowd wants but also that maybe their skills are not sufficient to produce the demanded quality by themselves...so they go for a producer and pay good money to get the track they want...imho a totally legitime way of doing things....rather than have a crappy track released and furthermore also be proud of it...

I was actually really surprised about how much cliché crap Krischan played at M'era Luna when he DJ'ed there two years back, but that went for every DJ at that festival, they are probably told what to play. :\

I think a good DJ will really know what works for a club track, it doesn't automatically follow they will be a good producer too, but having that ear for a good track and knowing from first hand experience what elements hook a crowd up is a good basis for writing good club music. Although I always made music, Modulate came out of me wanting to have new tracks to play in my DJ sets.

It's not a given that a good DJ will produce good music but some skills translate.
