  1. So guys, whats good in the world of distortion pedals? I'm tired of using Trash, so I'm thinking of getting a standalone unit to run my drum machine (machine drum & sr16) through (mostly for power noise shit...think ant zen, dive, mindstrip-era suicide commando). Right now I'm using the SE70 which is ok, but I'm sure there is something better out there. However, just about every distortion pedal looks exactly the same so I'm wondering if anyone here has any advice?

I've been looking at stuff like: damage control demonizer, ibanez tube king, line 6 uber metal (someone described it as "people in the audience will die"), metasonix stuff, and a few others. I'm thinking tube distortion is the way to go.

    thoughts/advice?

Personally, I really like my Roland DS1. It's a classic piece of kit with a really nice tone to it.

  3. want to get real nasty.. dont' fuck around.. just go with metasonix

i sold my original pro-co rat. it was a fucking beast but i found i enjoyed the sound of the Pro-co You Dirty Rat more.

i also use my Future Retro XS's filter since it has overdrive.. this distorts beautifully, and i use the microwave XT's waveshaping filter with a wavetable table that has excellent waves for distortion... i really like using filters for distortion since they can be modulated

i recently purchased Ohmicide and have been pleased so far because i've gotten distortion out of it that i haven't gotten from any of my other sources... it is highly configurable... this thing is more than just distortion.. it is equivalent to an instrument in my opinion. you should check this out if you don't mind using software because it has a slew of distortion options that you can use on particular frequency bands... ever try to distort a bass sound? it looses a lot of it's punch and character.. well with ohmicide i don't have to run the sound through a highpass filter and then distort that and then recombine the distorted highpass of the bass with the original bass sound... you can have like 4 different distortions all working on different frequency bands all with their own unique settings

there are lots of different types of hardware distortion too. bitcrushers which reduce the sample rate, waveshapers/wavefolders, tube distortion, clipping diode distortion

the Sherman Filterbank is a beast for distortion too and will probably be my next purchase... i need more space and another rack

  4. yeah I really like the sick shit that the metasonix stuff produces, but their fx units are pretty expensive.

I've used ohmicide and didn't really like it. I mean, it's powerful and well designed, but it sounds exactly like the other software distortions imo, and in that area I liked Trash better. but even that sounds too digital (even minus the amp sim) and I'd like something I can use live as well.

sherman filterbank is too expensive right now, though yes it looks incredibly epic.

  5. yeah i don't own any metasonix yet because of their price. videos on the internet make it sound awesome but I dislike spending that much money on things i haven't tried myself

    My favorite distortion pedals:

Way Huge Electronics - Pork Loin
Way Huge Electronics - Fat Sandwich
    Proco - Rat
    Death By Audio - Robot
    Digitech - Grunge
    Digitech - DeathMetal
    Boss - MetalZone

They all add different characteristics to the sound when hooked up to Drum Machines.

  7. You kind of have to run the gamut to get the tone you want. Like Dodd there, multiple FX units make different characteristics. There really is no ONE solution IMO. However, like Tsarik, I find that wave shaping analog set-ups share more control and provide better results to fuck up a signal. Distortion is a form of wave shaping, but it is very limited on most distortion pedals because they were mostly made for the mid range guitar sound. For example, get 2 dist pedals, the regular guitar version and a bass guitar version. You can hear the difference immediately. The bass version does not suck out all your original tone. Important for heavy kicks or full violent snare sounds.

Go through this site and read the various reviews: http://www.noisefx.com/ The Electro Harmox Bass Balls is crazy, the Audible Disease stuff is ridiculous. It will DESTROY sound. Check out the stuff at 4ms http://www.4mspedals.com/index.html I have a Noise Swash and the shit it will do to percussion is amazing. Having the controllable oscillators and three gain stages makes this thing capable of fucking up things completely.

Another manufacturer that I love the sound of in their distortion pedals is Moen http://www.moenfx.com/index.html

People need to make youtube vids showing how distortion pedals will wreck synths or drum machines. They have SO many for guitarists.

Can anybody post any demos of these pieces of kit? Maybe a dry drum loop and then the same thing through a few pedals?

    Posted 1 year ago #
  16. yup. it'll take me a bit longer as i'm without controller and interface at the moment

this is the video that gave me the kick to finally get the filterbank. it is semi modular too so it'll go far to expanding the Future Retro XS's capabilities and vise versa

You don't have to show me anything with a Filterbank, one has been on my shopping list for a while! I wants it! Andy/Combichrist showed me his a while back and told me he puts a lot of things through it just to give them some subtle grit. Very much what I'm after sound wise.

Currently I'm at: Nice mic, nice preamp, nice audio interface, repair mixer, control keyboard, new monitors (in both senses), filterbank, toys. Toys being a few Electro Harmonix pedals and some dirty analogue pedals and things. I'd actually love a nice two track analogue tape deck, something I can record into that little bit too hot and get some vibe going. I'd love a real Tape Echo. Probably a Neve preamp too. Though by all accounts this is very good. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar09/articles/goldenagepre73.htm

As much as I can make digital sound clean and clear, I find what I'm after is often presence and warmth. A little bit of dirt. 9/10 I'm not after super distorted shit, I just want to take that digital edge off things.

  18. I showed off the Noise Swash to Dracos yesterday, plugged in his Alesis drum machine. Much noise and chaos was the result. He then plugged in his acoustic/electric guitar, and that shit sounded wrecked and awesome too! I have a little phrase sampler here, I will drop in some drum loops/sounds and record some examples for sound cloud.

It will be much better when I have it hooked to an analog drum device.

Damn Josh- I cannot wait to hear what you do with that Filterbank. :D

  19. gotta buy a ring and get married first... so it'll be like 3 weeks until i get the filterbank... as a wedding present for myself

  20. Oh cool man! Congrats!

Too bad your new bride may not know about your intense gear lust. I know it was a shock for my wife. "You just bought some gear 6 months ago, now you want something new!?!"

    lol
