digital audio interface

(41 posts)

  1. sold my novation X-station. so now I no longer have an audio interface

    i don't need pre-amps, i don't need converters, i don't need lots of inputs

i want to use my eventide's ad/da converters and use the eventide's digital ins and outs to get things in and out of my DAW

the interface would need AES or SPDIF

i'm trying to save money on the interface since my eventide's converters are probably better than most $500 and under interfaces

    any suggestions

    thanks!

RME Hammerfall HDSP 9632 could be what you looking for....speaks SPDIF, AES/EBU and ADAT....

  3. overkill for my purposes.. but.. uh.. thanks?

  4. those Hammerfall cards have to be the some of the nicest I've seen, but I tend to record 1 thing at a time, so the RME would be like using a nuke when all i needed is a bullet.

after some exhaustive research i've decided to get an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 since i know it'll work with my OS, has midi in and out and digital inputs so i can bypass its converters

$500 is a pretty decent amount to play with as far as audio interfaces go!
I can't recommend the MOTU Ultralite Mk3 enough, and it falls under that price bracket. By most accounts, MOTU ADCs are second only to RME and Appogee (not including crazy high-end stuff like the Prism Sound Orpheus, etc), and much better than M-Audio. Whether that difference in quality is actually discernable or not I'm not sure (it sounds miles better than my old Tascam US-122 but that's not saying much!), but it's certainly well featured, and works great on both my PC and Mac (though especially on my Mac, admittedly).
Furthermore, its CueMix software is great, you can put Reverb, Dynamics and EQ on all inputs (DSP based = zero latency), which might suit someone as hardware-oriented as yourself, Tsarik. In this mode it even works as a standalone mixer without a computer...

well used they go away for around 150$

we use 6 of its big brother HDSP9652 for our 2 workplaces...and they are really nice...not problems if you decide to cascade them and stuff...I also would not recommend MOTU..they sound nice...but their drivers imho are something of the worst ever coded....

well the M-Audio looks nice though....

  7. i believe drivers and support are a big part of the equation.. you can have fantastic hardware and build quality but if your drivers suck... then the hardware wont ever perform to its capabilities

i was hesitant to decide on the m-audio. i've heard nothing but bad things about their controllers. some research showed that they've been making this particular model for many years and lots of people have been satisfied, and it will work well with windows 7 64 bit. i only needed a midi in and out and a digital input, so it fits my needs perfectly

i can't fathom why you would need 6 of those hammerfall beasts

well our setup looks like this:

    Production place:

3 Alesis hd24 as A/D Converters with 24 channels each..means one card per HD...(I have around 30 hardware Synths with 2-10 outputs)..

    Recording place:
6 x RME ADI 8 DS (48 Channels) A/D D/A converters...means 2 cards needed...and the guy offered us quite some discount if we took all his stuff, so we got the card almost for free....and used it as a Master-Wordclock generator for the recording chain....

  9. @Josh- I have the Audiophile card. I love it. It was pretty cheap but it has worked out fantastically all around.

If its Mac your using I recommend MOTU interfaces, they are super reliable and can take a lot of processing
and ill second virul3nt, the Cuemix software is one of the best interface software I have seen

oh....if you record the digital way make sure you sync your wordclocks...i dunno if the eventide can send the WC-signal over the SPDIF..but I think it should....on the first sight this seems not to be needed..but if you do...you will hear the difference...

oh and if possible....use 48KHz...wou also will hear more resolution....imho

Pete: Has your Ultralite given you the dreaded freezing issue? I hear complaints about it here and there.

  15. thanks for the heads up, Yade.

here i was thinking recording digitally would be easier because there would be one less stage i'd have to worry about clipping... the eclipse can send word clock many ways but i think BNC is best.

i don't think the m-audio card can receive word clock... so more research.

  16. @Josh- Yeah, it doesn't. I have been thinking about getting an external word clock, just to see if there is really much of a difference. Not going to spend over 1k for it though. I have been listening to reviews on the Micro Clock by Black Lion Audio. I currently do not record my outboard gear digitally. So I think I will get this clock and try it out to see if it has a good effect on my mixes. 500$ will be worth an experiment.

  17. yeah, i wouldn't record digitally if i had to buy a word clock since i only record for fun... but spending a little extra for a card that can receive clock isn't bad

  18. found a M-Audio 1010LT for $50. can't beat that.

i'm interested to see what the sound difference is when i record through the card's analog inputs using it's converters and when i record through it's digital inputs using the eventide's.

i'll make 3 recordings with the same patch and FX.

    1 analog
1 digital without sending wordclock from the eventide
1 digital with wordclock sent from the eclipse

I'd be interested in hearing the results of that test, just out of curiosity. Any chance you'll post them?
