What is the best rompler vst for real sounds that is designed for people with a basic 3 chord understanding of music theory. What i mean by this is I don't want to have to put abunch of orchestral sections of instruments to play things. Like i mean I want a string sound not a violin, violia, etc etc

worms is right, get yourself some kurzweil or even korg x5d (if you find m1, grab it) or yamaha sy-77 (it is a romler AND fm synth) or something similar. you can buy those machines dirt cheap and you'll have far better sounds than any rompler vst, you'll have a nice keyboard. you can even go module route, try e-mu's proteuses and other e-mu modules (don't know names, vintage synth explorer is your friend) or the akai sg01v

The sy-77 is a pretty cool old machine, i'm looking into one myself.

I think he wants something like the Roland XV series though, which later became the Fantom.

I'd recommend Nexus for the VST, and Roland for hardware.

  5. Get the KORG Legacy VST with the M1 and the Wavestation. Very good stuff, I always turn to it for authentic instrumentation.

    Hard:Korg Triton
Yamaha Motif XS(just got this one as a gift. wooooah.)
    Roland Jv 2080
    Roland JD 990

    Soft-Kontakt
    Omnisphere
NI Akoustik and Electrik Piano (came with Komplete)

Hope you aren't asking for software just so you can steal it :(

the dimension pro has nice full range string pad sounds but it also does the sectioned off violin, viola, etc. thing as well. so you can use either with it.

As much as I want to like the Korg Legacy Collection,
The M1 and Wavestation (I really like the sound of these two)
the sound does not work well in anything I'm doing, no idea why.

I love the Mono/Poly, even though it's not nearly accurate of an emulation.

The Yamaha Motif sounds are pretty terrible, they built the presets
right into the HalionOne in Cubase 5 after the Yamaha/Steinberg merger FYI.

You could try Sonik Synth 2 also.

  9. Well, FYI, I didn't pay for the thing. I still think it sounds great for real world instruments.

The only thing is I like using software vsti. When I first started experimenting with electronic music I had a korg ms2000 but I could never get it to stay in sync with my program. Then I got into vsts and I am just hooked on how simple the whole thing is. Hardware technical problems don't interfere with my creativity, I can just jump right into a track. The Nexus is cool for trance like sounds but I need something for organic sounds. There has to be a good enough rompler out there that is vsti for what i need. Besides I am kinda turned off from the whole triton/fantom thing. The sounds always make me feel like I am writing mainstream hiphop :)

hate to break it to you but you know mainstream hip hop producers are hella using VST romplers too

i bought a korg trinity tr a few years ago which was totally built for hip hop and it has become one of my favorite synths (well, rompler). i fucking love the strings on that thing. the trinity is from like...97(?) maybe earlier...anyway i have komplete 5 and imo the stuff you can make in kontakt and the 2 pianos is nice, but cant touch the fullness and organicness of the trinity even though the trinity sounds dated as hell. the strings and pads are so dark and...big. i am hoping this year to upgrade to a newer kurzweil rack :). so yeah, most vst orchestral stuff just sounds so cheesy to me. although a friend of mine showed me one that is widely used in the film industry and it sounded really good (although really digital)...cant remember the name though

If you are looking for a simple vst rompler .. most are lacking and motif/fantoms will sound a lot better. If you are wanting to stick to software then you should invest in sample libraries.. but they are rather expensive (in comparison), require many GB of space, and take time to load patches.

You can find a lot of sample libray info here

    http://www.soundsonline.com/home.php

Stuff from East West in particularly good.

Oh yeah.. most DAW come with some basic sounds in a plugin of some sort that covers these bases .. at least for a beginner. Unless you are using FL Studio or something..

@rayzr - Not everyting in Halion is directly from the Motif and the better sounds in the Motif are not included in Halion.. I wish they were though the Motif has a lot of really good patches.

you can't invest 1200$ better than this when you are looking for "real" instruments...

  19. As far as choir sounds go, the DSK Choirz VSTi has some interesting sounds - 3osc, choice of 20+ choir and other waveforms, seems stable in ComputerMuzys & Cubase Essential, and it's free. Whilst it was described as beat software, it hasn't caused any performance or other issues in my DAW. I'm using it a lot at the moment on new material.

  20. Um, for "beat", read "beta". Ooops
