  1. Okay, so here's one thing that REALLY grinds my gears about the ready availability of music, or more accurately, how the de-facto mode of promoting an album has become to post snippets of the entire album online.

Because nowadays, more often than not, it has become the case that a band will post all the best bits of the album for free, readily available on the web. This can sometimes be a good thing, but much more frequently, the full album turns out to be those little good bits you can get for free, plus 50 minutes of filler.

This has happened so many times now that I feel rather conned.

The snippets i hear on Amazon normally don't give me any idea of the songs, because it's often just the intro before the vocals kick in and certainly aren't the best bits. Regarding snippets put up by bands, do you expect them to put the worst parts up instead? I suppose it's no worse than putting out a lead single to promote an album which isn't representative of the rest of the tracks.

The solution is longer snippets, such as the 2 minute ones provided by Dependent, which give you a better feel in ascertaining if it's a good buy or not.

  4. I agree. I have always gone the route of 2min clips. You cannot tell how an album will sound in 30 sec clips but you can get a decent snapshot with 2 min clips. Dependent has the right idea. Putting up longer clips and giving away specific tracks for promotional purposes direct from the website.

Another thing bands have been doing is dropping a collective mix of the tracks on SoundCloud. I like this approach as well. Heard the new Modeselektor this way and it has made me crazy with anticipation. On the other hand VNV did this as well and I determined that the new album is garbage. :P

The really nice thing though for fans of your music is that you can take that waveform and promote it elsewhere on the net. Effectively helping distribution and promotion for your music and your ideas.

Once an album is released it should be streamed completely.

Yep ... and easy to use!
Why should musicians/ labels let someone else do the job of presenting their music? As soon as complete tracks are made available by some random guy, nobody is going to care for those 2 minute snippets anymore ... suddenly the copyright owner loses control (and maybe customers).

Well the easy answer is free promotion. You get a lot more attention streaming on Hype Machine than anyone ever did sending music to a radio station or magazine. Bandcamp is a great tool. It presents your music in a professional manner and allows you complete control over the process. It's lacks a promotional "sharability", like SoundCloud though. When you see a SC waveform on someones blog with like, a million comments. It's peaks your curiousity. It is a great and simple promotional tool. It also provides valuable feedback in an industry and market that is always blowing smoke up your ass. That's the double-edged sword of advancing technology. You are allowed to be everywhere at once, but you have to keep in mind your audiences perception of what you are doing.

  9. As soilodge mentioned, there's bandcamp, last.fm, soundcloud, The Hype Machine, The Sixty One, and other social music sites that allow for full previews.

If I want to know what an album sounds like before I buy it, I'll find a stream online, listen to some songs on youtube, or if all else fails download the album from a blog.

Errr, my point was: why do (bigger?) labels not participate in this? They provide their little snippets while everybody else is having fun.
What i was trying to say is: as a band, offer complete streams, try to get people to come to you (instead to a random youtube channel without any links to places to discover more about the band)and give them the right buttons to klick on.
I´m totally ok with this free promotion, but i just don´t understand why many musicians and labels don´t join the party.

  11. Oh, sorry Dejan, I misunderstood what you meant.

I suspect that the bands that do not participate in this kind of promotion are tied to bigger labels. And bigger labels do not do this sort of thing because they are still upset that they are no longer in control of the industry. These types of corporations believe they control the market and can direct people to thier proposed media outlets whilst black-listing the others. They think they can fool people with schemes and directing trends. This is not the case anymore. The audience has complete control in what and how much they buy.

The problem is that many of the indie labels are still behaving like the majors and most of them are really not clever enough to understand the industry shifted and that it is necessary to embrace constant change until a new sort of balance is met. If this is ever met at all-which is a very bleak but realistic view imo.
