How about this synth? Any first hand experience with it? How are the models of the legacy synths included in it?

It is software, i dont know how it sounds on its own hardware though..
From the demos, not impressed.

Korg DW-8000 sounds 10 times better and you can find one for 1/10th the price easily if not cheaper
not that they're similar or anything... i just really dislike the sound of Artuia's software

I really like my Origin..
it offers me the functionality to use a lot of voices at a time, offers a bunch of realtime modifications and the sound for me is very nice....I compared it to a real minimoog and must say that the difference is imho almost not there....the Tonewheel Generator is nice if you don't want to carry a full Rhodes or organ with you and the modular functionality really kicks ass if you spend some time programming...
I use it a lot in my production...be it as bass or paddish leadline....in my house-productions it has become a pretty fix part for the basses and some FX...@Tsarik: I think the only thing you can compare an Origin with is a Minimoog or CS-80 or so....

I read up on it a bit, the hardware version. Seems like a team of VST's boxed in a great interface with dual dedicated DSP's. This is almost like stepping backwards [digital VA synths have always been like this, VST instruments just took out the hardware interface and piggybacked on your computer processor and and sound card converters.
EXCEPT that the Origin allows you to mix up different synthesis styles and filters from legendary classic synths. It's like a VA Modular, where patches can be incredibly complex because they are not sharing resources with the rest of your computer progs.
I cannot believe it takes nearly 40 sec to boot up though?
[+] Embed the video Get the Video Widget I agree with this vid review. It can do a lot in one package, but is it worth it for the price? And does it accurately emulate those old synths? The demos just do not really strike me enough to consider the price.

@Michael: yes it does...the newest firmware made it a bit better, but it is still around 30sec to boot up...
and considering the price....for the 2000$ your get it atm for, I think you get a very nice sounding, very flexible unit...if you would like to get a minimoog you also pay as much...and the difference between the voyager edition and the template of the origin were when we tested it almost not audible...

Interesting, but I am still skeptical. I find it hard to believe that DSP's can emulate analog circuitry very well. I have spent some time with an ARP 2600. I need to get over to Guitar Center to demo this thing and see if that emulation is worthwhile.
Have you used it on any mixes on your SoundCloud?

well it is somehow funny how people doubt that the DSPs can emulate this....but use UADs that emulate "vintage" gear over and over..
the cool thing about a DSP is, that it can, due to its RISC architecture, fulfill well-defined tasks better dann a "normal" PC or Mac which has to handle a lot more stuff...
I used it in every track in the last few productions...in the Nachtmahr-Remix it is the pad in the break and the sidechained saw in the back,
in the latest remix for Vigilante it is the bassline in the beginning,
in the Heavy Rain Alpha it's also the bassline you hear and some pad-sound

gotcha. Thanks.

Simulating analog circuitry obviously depends on the accuracy of such simulation, which means processing power. I kinda doubt that the fixed point dsp code is a good match for that but yes it can be done.
The question here is, how good? Is there any improvement over the software counterparts? If it has a decent moog emulation along with jupiter etc. and allows me to connect synth modules as I like, that's nice.

The best way IMO to test out a VA emulator synth is to hit each octave and try to find where it is weakest. Every VA synth has a strong point and a weak point, where as an analog synth is powerful from the lowest bass sounds to the highest dog calling chirps. I have yet to find a VA that really stands up. Now if you are just using it for bread and butter sounds like Yade is doing, it would be fine, but most VA's are great for that. Looking at the architecture on this thing, it appears you can do some really amazing shit with it. But I have not heard anything that confirms that yet.

it depends on so many factors it's impossible to know without hearing it, and yeah, that sounds like a good test, i'll try it if i come across this module at sam ash, they seem to be stocking it. if i'm amazed by any sounds i might buy it. everybody loves the access virus, but i seem to be hearing some oddness especially in the bass. i really need a good moog style synth that i can easily use.
or maybe i should get the alesis andromeda :)

I really only like the Virus B. The rest to me sound too clean and fake-if that makes any sense. I feel the same way about the Nord. If you are going to spend that kind of money get the Dave Smith Poly Evolver. That shit is out of control with sound design. They use it in I Parasite and just like the Modular Chris uses, the thing cuts through the mix like no other. It overshadows distorted bass, guitar, and live drums. It is fucking unbelievable. And he just has the tabletop evolver.
In fact, if the Virus does not cut it for you, you are likely not going to find a VA that fits the bill. Because it really is the best most well rounded VA. You are going to have to go hybrid or analog.
If you want a Moog style synth why don't you just get a Moog? Since your dropping 2K on a synth you might as well get the real thing. Or you could build a Moog style modular system. Get a sick ass CV controller and have total freedom.

How much would it cost to build a modular and how would I get the components? Can I get a MIDI-to-CV converter? I'd like to be able to control it by MIDI if possible at all.
I haven't really examined the Poly Evolver, but given the awesomeness of the synth sounds in I Parasite, I guess that's a big thing I'm missing on. Let me read up on it a little.

oh, it's an analog synth of course it's going to sound awesome :))))) so how do you think it stacks up against the alesis andromeda?
Posted 1 year ago # -
hmm evolver's tabletop version is affordable and cute :) i think i'm going to buy it :))))
Posted 1 year ago # -
For some reason the sound of the Andromeda never intrigued me. Plus the layout is messy and overwhelming. For 3k that really is a turn-off. I just think the DSI synths are more elegant and from my own demos able to make some more completely fucked up sounds.
[+] Embed the video Get the Video Widget Now if you were doing a 70's prog rock style thing, I think the Andromeda would be a better fit.

Yeah, that is what I have been looking at too-but waiting to see if the album will pan out first. I need to jump soon and get something though, my gear lust is overwhelming.
If you heard I, Parasite "Stone Doctor". It is the synth that comes in all harsh after the piano. That shit is SICK.

::How much would it cost to build a modular and how would I get the components? ::
for about $1500 you can snag an entry level synthesizers.com modular kit & build your machine out from there.
http://www.synthesizers.com/system-entry1.htmlthen as funds become available add on whatever random or custom modules you like. i know a couple people who went this route, got them operational quickly & left them room to grow over the years. sky is the limit.

yeah that's surely a great direction, i didn't know it could be this affordable. there is also a lot of potential for experimentation here, nice, thanks for the pointers.
