@djtekslave: This Morn' Omina sounds promising. The others aren't dark.

@Sumez: The JR songs that I've heard don't sound dark except for Zwara.

  5. When does a song sound "dark" to you? I'd say most of the Labyrinth album sounds quite similar to Zwara.

Also, This Morn' Omina isn't "promising", it's one of the best electronic acts ever.

You're right, Labyrinth does sound dark. Does JR have any other albums like this one? Any other artists similar to this? I'll check out more by TMO.

Well JR isn“t "that" dark imho. But also it is the question if you mean the more goa juno (early+middle) or the newer juno, which is much more diversed and hardly can be called goa or psy anymore (imo), what i heard had much world, asian, triphop and ambient influences. And was not always beat oriented - like the early stuff.

I made also 2-3 tracks which could be considered more darktrance or darktechno (whatever) I used to call it helltrance LOL I was in the process to upload some older songs and demos/experiments in this direction. However it is NOT goa like JR. Just search for Alpha Quadrant on last.fm or myspace. Also download this sampler from 07:

The other bands are WOMP (indus dance?) + whiteout (experimental, idm)

  9. I just performed at a psytrance festival that Ben from Juno Reactor DJ'd at. Psytrance kind of drives me nuts after a little while though because most of it's pretty formulaic. Buildup, trigger sample, drop the kick drum and bass, buildup, sample, drop the lead, rinse repeat...

I don't know about darker though...I mean there's Delerium, Shpongle, Infected Mushroom, Emperion those types of acts could be considered darker at times or at least in the same vein.

I hated Labyrinth though. It was really just all soundtrackish stuff they did for movies (The Matrix)...not nearly as good as Shango, Bible of Dreams or Beyond the Infinite.

  11. if you like This Morn Omina check out Geomatic. New album on Tympanik is really good.

there is probably some dark goa or dark psy out there but I haven't kept up with it. There was one guy I was supposed to play with in Quebec City called Xenomorph...pretty dark psy, though he uses guitars.

although LOL @ Shpongle being dark. Shpongle is probably the least dark thing ever

  12. Meh, they have a couple of tracks that put on a good dark mood.

  13. don't get me wrong, I really like Shpongle but come on, their lyrics are stuff like "dmt lsd i love everybody do dee do dee love love love love" or something about floating on a sea of blissful awareness. simon posford is a great producer though. Although what about his psy project Hallucinogen? I haven;t heard it in forever but I vaguely remember it being somewhat dark...? It had that good "old" sound to it at least.

  14. Oh yeah! Hallucinogen haha. Completely forgot about them too. Like Infected Mushroom for sure.

You're right about a lot of the Shpongle stuff, like "Around the World in a Tea Daze" - totally gay name to begin with. I don't have my iPod with me right now but there's one or two tracks that are the 12+ minute pieces that have good ambience. The rest of the catalog is pretty fluffy at times.

  15. If you want dark psy, Dark SOHO all the way. Also, it is worth checking out GMS who are basically the Funker Vogt of psy trance.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

@Sumez: That track in the video sounds like old-school ebm. Good bassline but I'm looking for something more complex.

@De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas: Something that has the psy/goa influence but is more diversified and more on the industrial/goth side.

@digitalgeist: Yeah, psytrance can be too formulaic sometimes with the same bass sounds and the rising pitch sound. I don't really care for all the samples about drugs and eastern religions.

I'll check out some of these dark psy artists that you guys mentioned but which ones have horror samples and melodies because most of the dark psy I've heard wasn't very melodic?
