It looks like the project has morphed into another movie all together.

<obligatory "Game Over, man!" comment>
fuck . I was just looking around for recent information about this the other day, too.
Why the sad smiley?
The movie hasn't been cancelled, it has been improved to something much more ambitious than a mediocre cash-in. With the recent news, this is suddenly something I'm looking much more forward to.
nobody does toga movies like ridley scott
I want Aliens!
I want a new original Ridley Scott movie in the same vein as the original Alien movie, but not based on the now completely derailed Alien Universe that should have been concluded with the first movie or at least never reused Ripley as a character.
If they could ressurect Batman from the shitty movie grave, they can do Aliens.
The Dark Horse Alien comics and books had so many cool stories and concepts.
In the case of Batman, they DIDN'T continue the f'ed up storyline, though, they made something new from scratch (again). :)
edit: Argh, I'm this close to giving up ever posting on SL, this place is totally ruined by ads and stuff making the site ridiculously inaccessible.

wow Sumez, that's exactly what I came here to post. you've saved me time.
what sumez says. keep mystery mystery. far more alien that way INNIT?
I guess there are no "Alien" fans up in here....

Which is exactly what the prequel was out to do.
The point is yeah all the last Alien sequels sucked horribly. This was a new hope for the franchise. I can't get excited about Scott's new "Avatar"-like ambitious movie if it has nothing to do with what he originally set out to do. Fine make whatever movie but please bring the Alien movies back to form!
I'm a big fan of the original Alien movie, but the Aliens-universe from the second movie on sort of ruined all the, as COTB put it, mystery from the world surrounding the first movie. It's not that the subsequent movies (I even think Resurrection is decent) don't respect the original movie, but as the trend went on, it just grew less unique and interesting, taking the setting from a secluded space horror in a mysterious cyberpunk future to a Star Wars-like nerdy canon. You couldn't save that with something as simple as better movies or a reboot of the franchise.
It is like if they made four sequels to Blade Runner and then went on to combining it with other movie settings for additional cash-ins, resurrecting Deckard a billion times and totally ruining his character and the riddles surrounding the first movie. (and yeah, I know it's based on a book with more details, but that doesn't change my point)
I think they should make Alien vs Mr. Freeze!!!!!!!
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, and Hulk Hogan as the Alien!!!!
"CHILL OUT, BITCH!"
"SPIT SPIT, HISS HISS, BROTHER!"
@Black Oil, YES YES YES YES YES!
But yeah, I wasn't too sad about them not making a prequel, I would have preferred a sequel to be honest. I know all the AvP's have been terrible, but I really think a prequel would have ruined all the mystery, and would have probably just turned into a massive action movies of the aliens vs the crashed spaceship people/things from Alien.
With Matt Damon.
BTW, Sumez. If you use Firefox with the AdBlock plugin, you can get rid of all the ads, although I'm not sure if it completely wipes out that stupid auto-refresh bs.
"SCREW YOU!!!!"
I'm excited about this. Giger is still involved too? Sounds like Win to me. Fucking tired of linear film tbh..
`michael
I think this is a good move. Too many prequels and reboots out there as it is. Giving Ridley the freedom to fully create and explore a new universe un-constrained by Aliens history/mythology is a good thing. I'm really looking forward to this.

Of course any reboot or prequel without a good director would most likely suck.
The movie doesn't HAVE to be all about Aliens but at least be a spinoff of something. In the comics and books there was plenty of awesome ideas to work with. I still say if they can bring back Batman from Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy hell, they can do it with an Alien movie, with the right director.
Ok make a different movie, but that has nothing to do with what was originally mentioned! I'm so dissapointed.
I don't see anything officially tieing it to the Alien universe. Is Giger still involved?
Sumez, this is where our difference in oppinion is. Alien and Aliens are the only watchable movies (aside from Alien vs Predator Requiem which is just an all out fun movie to watch on cable tv. I think I liked that one better because the Aliens were finally on earth.)
The rest are horrible. Maybe Alien 3 was...ok. Ressurection was complete garbage.
