From an idea born in a tiny Birmingham flat, Matt and Lee Parsons have helped over 30,000 artists distribute their music to a world-wide audience. In 2006, Matt and Lee wanted to release their own music independently. By the time they set up a record label, worked out barcodes and ISRC codes, and finally managed to get their music distributed six months had passed. Their momentum stalled, their fans moved on, and their track limped into the charts at number 70. Their music career was over.

just a track of a drone patch I made on the Future Retro XS with some reverb provided by the Eventide Eclipse

i know these noisy synth demos are boring to most. i do enjoy programing and tweaking drones and noisy patches though. i plan on cutting out chunks of that track and copying and pasting them back in such a way to make a more rythmic pattern.

Hey guys,
Doing a little cleaning up in my studio I found quite a few same loops I'd made that I hadn't used and thought I'd offer them as a free download.
http://digitalgeist.com/you-like-free-things-right/
This first sample pack is 363mb, 75 loops all with the root note of C at 140bpm, and you can use them however you want.

Been waiting for a while for a promotion on EASTWEST samples and the NAMM 50% special tempted me for Voices of Passion. Two nights later… now wish I’d not even bothered. Why design a sound engine that takes a fucking degree in computer science to install (what’s wrong with NI’s Kontakt)? Anyway sill not got it installed on my vista 65 bit machine. My advice stay away from EASTWEST sample libraries you will be ripping your hair out. Asked for my cash back after two days of crap tech support and getting nowhere.

Please do not recommend the MC-500 MkII. I did battle with it and lost once ;-)

Some time ago I composed on an R8 drum machine and enjoyed it. So recently I thought to try getting back to basics and employing a TR-707 and a pattern sequencer for compositional tools. I am so hugely inspired by it now. Composing sans-DAW is really liberating for some reason. So I am contemplating a gear purchase. A hardware sequencer.

I have been told the Yamaha RMX-1 and Roland MC-808 are very good sequencers for little expenditure. Any truth to this? What others might I focus on?

im trying to get something affordable that will sound good as a preamp/mixer for recording both vocals and instruments (guitars mostly/etc). What is good thats affordable out there? Ive looked at some really cheap interfaces, including some on ebay for under 70 bucks...

I just want to get something that will let me record a clearer signal than just plugging into my sound cards mic in. I guess a bit of mixing functions would be nice (eq/levels/gain/etc) but I dont see it really necessary as long as I can monitor the signal live coming out of my daw.... which brings me to my other question, can you monitor the signal after its sent through your computer thru a usb interface? Ive just never used one or set one up.

Ive heard from other people that you need something around 300+ that sounds good for a usb interface/mixer/preamp thing. Is there really a difference? I've tried some cheap non-usb mixers before and they produced ALOT of added hiss and noise to the mic signal which seemed to render them useless imo. I don't know if USB interfaces clean that noise up or not, but I would think (hope?) so. If i could get a cheap mini usb interface will that sound worse or produce more noise/hiss than a expensive one? Thanks for any info or suggestions. much appreciated

I dont care if its a guitar petal, or part of a modular synth system. Anything that I can process my audio through to destroy and rape the sound to death!

I would run guitars, synths and samples through this when needed.

I am basically wondering how to warp and distort percussion and general sound effects in a manner that makes them heavy, wet and crunchy without being ear rape. I have made music for a long time but my more abstract and power noise attempts have almost always resulted in ending up sounding like a mess, even when I try to mix them well. Are there more subtle ways to distort that are more easy to control in the EQ department? I use predominantly software and FL Studio with a large collection of samples, softsynths and free and bought VST effects. Thanks.

Does anyone happen to know any good resources for either replacing misaligned keys or fixing them by chance? A D key on my Virus polar has started sticking up at higher angle than the rest and even though it still works I can feel it getting slightly stuck when I release it.

The compositions I am currently working on were fleshed out in the DAW. But now they are entirely running from hardware. And they sound better now - like eye-opening better! The DAW provided some basics for each track, tempo, EQ, levels but a few tracks got heavy processing like granualar resynthesis and stuff. Afterward I exported the tracks in chunks and normalized them and added further processing in Sound Forge before porting them to the sampler. Many of them were actually sampled direct in order to employ hardware effects with real-time parameter control.
Once in the sampler the synth engine became the new signal chain. Each track now has the benefit of an entire synth engine with 3 envelopes, two tempo-synced LFOs, dynamic tempo-synced panning and levels, filters, pitch manipulation etc. etc. as well as the sample manipulation features. Add to that the built-in FX and 16 assignable outputs.

The sampler is under control from an Emu MP-7 for sequencing and real-time controllers. And the Mp-7 adds it's own sounds as well as sequencing/controlling my various other synths. All audio is running to the mixer where 4 FX processors are connected as channel sends and the groups have a send/receive loop where various other hardware units can be patched in via patchbay for the overall mix.

It has been alot of work getting here so far. It has not been convenient in the least. But it has been rewarding and hugely satisfying. Especially now that I am structuring the composition without having to touch a damn mouse or clicking and dragging and drawing envelopes and all that Jazz. Now I reach for a knob on the Mp-7 assign it to whatever and twist it. One thing I do spend a bit of mouse-time on now is the sampler's GUI control program Aksys. But it is kinda fun to use so I don't mind turning back to the PC for this.

The power at my disposal is roughly equivalent to that which I had in the DAW. But on-the-fly edits and adjustments are so much faster now. And overall the sound is really what makes it worth the effort. And that effort will be significantly diminished once I stop fleshing shit out in the DAW. Everything is tighter, brighter, punchier and more cohesive sounding now. Everything I loved about the music I did in the 1990s sound-wise is realized again.

Fuck the DAW and fuck the PC and fuck plugins! fuck convenience!!!! Keep that shit. I'm offically a hardware convert now! And the hardware fucking rocks! Long live the patchbay!
