the proof is definitely in the pudding.

in my search for knowledge in all things synth I've come across many, many people evidently know everything there is to know about the production of electronic music, have tons of money and studios filled with enough lust worthy gear to set your mind spinning with envy.

i would poor over the posts of these... my new found, electro gurus, their opinions becoming my Commandments. I'd drool over their gear, envious at the amount of fun they must be having in their super studios.

then i started looking them up.. checking out their forum signatures and going to their personal websites and listening to the music they've made with such epic pieces of iconic synthesizer and music production history.

unfortunately, what I've found every time is the most generic music I've ever heard. I was so let down..

i mean listened to these guys talk about how "X" sucks because it didn't allow them to have 138 tracks of just automation data, which was absolutely necessary to their innovative and original productions. (/sarcasm)

really... i mean.. fucking really? 100+ tracks of automation on top of all the audio tracks, etc. all the 1,000s of dollars of gear and seemingly intimate knowledge of all of their inner workings and it sounded completely generic.

its laughable and sad that so many would think that famous and popular musicians would use such lowly gear as a SM58.

evidently all the gear in the world hasn't helped those with such a mindset. maybe it would behoove them to believe that Trent would have zero qualms over using a $5 dollar computer microphone. that way they get over themselves and the gear they have, stop talking about the gear they have and start actually making music.

Creativity and ingenuity... they've been the driving force behind music since the very first caveman start banging on shit.

It is definitely possible.

Are you seeing any error messages? What OS are you using?

I am reading here: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=133673

- Right-click on the Live8.1.1.exe and choose 'Properties'.

- In the following Window click on the 'Compatibility' tab. Check the box for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and choose from the drop-box-menu beneath 'Windows Vista (Service Pack2)'.

- Then start Live.

- You've to re-authenticate Live.
So, if u've Live already installed Live on a Desktop and on a laptop like me (and thus used both of your Unlocks), u need to contact the support, tell them your problem and ask for additional Unlocks for your license (they gave me extra ones, too).

- After re-authentication, I restarted Live one more time and closed it again. So, when I finally started Cubase 5, 'Ableton Live ReWire' showed up in the Device menu and Live automatically started in Slave mode.

It's true. I read the same article. Also a lot of Dave Gahan's vocals are tracked with a hand-held SM58. Of course he is running through a near-million dollar effects chain, so that certainly compensates for a lot.

"I really doubt that Manson or Trent ever recorded a released song over a SM58"

This is incorrect. It was first mentioned in an article in Mix magazine I believe with Dave Ogilvie. I do not recall what month/year. But Nothing studios in NoLa had an array of microphones and Trent was known to use SM57's and 58's in conjunction with more expensive solid state and tube pre-amps to get certain tone vocals. As well as even older vintage style microphones that were used in writing and recording songs that were released on albums.

Gear lust is neat, but far from necessary. If you want to spend a bunch of money and have a high overhead to cost of doing music, have fun. But I do not want people here getting the idea that expensive gear will make you sound or perform better. Creativity and ingenuity go much further.

For instance, everyone here may feel that NIN goes for all types of amps and pre-amps and analog effects to ascertain that serious guitar tone and versatility. But actually most of it was NI Guitar Rig sets and experimenting with different production ideas. You do not need a big studio to achieve a big studio sound anymore. It's all in the box and the resolution you use to capture the signal.

That is like saying an HD video signal will not look as good as a monochrome signal. The reason why MIDI has difficulty as a precision protocol in todays devices is not processing power. It is because MIDI is not optimized to be used by todays processors. It is like using a 28k modem to run a flash video. MIDI is transmitted as 16 channels and 128 control change parameters. OSC transfers info in bundles that smoke the limitations of MIDI. HD MIDI or MIDI 2.0 would quadruple available functions and render information in such high resolution that precision music would attack a whole new level.

Bryan should test his hardware units with a soft-synth and DAW that uses OSC. See which has more precision results. Logically a higher resolution instrument in a higher resolution field will give more precision results.

In the end, though, I really do not care about timing either. I like a certain human fallibility or groove in the music I enjoy. But the concept of high resolution control changes and more expressive abilities in my gear is very attractive. I do not like Ableton Live, but soon other DAW's will be developing into the OSC protocol [or HD-MIDI if they ever get off their asses] Which means more control, more expression, and completely wireless instant interactivity.

Also OSC opens the possibilities for net hosted performances. Imagine 6 artists in different parts of the world all simultaneously performing together as a band for different audiences. We would no longer have to share files to collaborate or do remixes. It could be done in real time no matter where you were in the world. That is where we are heading with communications in general in the future. Of course, it is still ways off, but I think it is time we took some steps with our music protocol to reach that edifice.

it isn't really about old tech and an old protocol

i'm not sure higher tech will produce tighter results than those old machines Brian tested.

the way computers works... each process that is running is given processor time. this program gets a nanosecond , that program gets a nanosecond, etc, etc, etc.

so if you need really tight timing. you don't have to buy an old fucking atari. just use dedicated hardware

personally i could give 2 shits about tight timing.. but i guess that is because i grew up listening to metal and have practically been saturated in live music since birth.

midi is definitely old and dated. but it works fairly well. new standards are sure to work better but then there is the problem with it backwards compatible. are we going to need Osc to Midi to CV converters some day?

Various Artists: "ELECTRONIC AID TO HAITI"

http://sigmedia.us/

SIGDR001 - Electronic Aid to Haiti (Digital Download)

We all share a planet that is repeatedly shattered by human tragedies. Each and every tremor at the far end of the world is an apocalypse for thousands of people whose lives are often threatened by the vagaries and whims of a hard climate. Even the small funds this compilation might raise could help a number of Haitians. If some relief can be brought, however slightly,to some and help them rebuild their lives, then this project will not have been in vain.

Army of shadows, you can take part in the international support to Haiti in your own way. All the profits generated by the internet sales of this electro-industrial music anthology will be donated to the Red Cross (Croix Rouge) to aid victims of the disaster.

The purpose of this anthology is to raise some funds for the Red Cross and support their dedication to the Haiti earthquake victims.Any piracy, copying or unauthorized remote loading of this compilation on P2P sites would be selfish and mindless. Neither the label nor the bands will get any profits from this project... So please purchase this album and help those in need. .

I got surprised by the album in a positive way. The fears that I had - me being a passionate Welle Erdball - despiser - did not become true. A good album and nice step beside the regular Mind.In.A.Box - track.

@Virul3nt: I really doubt that Manson or Trent ever recorded a released song over a SM58......
the Frontliner is a cool thing because it is versatile...you can also send for instance a kick through only the Compressor or another MONO signal through only the EQ section...

I don't understand why everyone is so eager about tube sat in the preamping......for vocals or acoustic instruments with a lot of harmonics they can add something (if wanted...) but for Synthesizer signals I am rather tending to solid state..

we usually use the tubes in the final multiband-compression (SMC-2B)

btw: maybe skip the frontliner and buy instead a Millenia Media STT-1 Origin....offers both tube and solid state logic....and sounds....well.....FUCKING AWESOME....for me this is the only piece of gear that can easily compete with my MEC-1A by Tube-Tech...it may even imho sound a little bit better....:-)

and hey, we´ve just launched them with METRO in the US! So I guess this should give them more popularyty, also the gig at WGT will!

We´re constantly working to build them up! They´ve released three outstanding albums!

if you want tube saturation, you can try empirical's distressor as well, too expensive for me, but it is supposed to be a great thing for aggressive coloring, whether it is guitar, vocals or a synth
i achieve saturation using diy/ghetto gear though, we have a budget tube preamp/comp (http://www.thomann.de/gb/art_tube_pac.htm) and i bought a rather cheap old field recording reel to reel, when neccessary i use things like ferox or other plugins for saturation. another great thing is the shitty walkman distortion, used directly it is shit, but when you use it as a send it can have some pretty decent effect

@ Rogue Process : I'll add french band Shane Cough, first and third albums are top-notch (forget about the 2nd, tho) - and I sure agree on everyone on the list, even if I tend to think that with Punish Yourself we didn't ever tried to be "digital hardcore".

yep..a 20 yr old computer runs a 28 year old protocol better.

So when are we going to adopt a high definition protocol as the standard and move into the 21st century? MIDI HD or OSC anyone?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9vpVEP5ooU

Many electronic artists are using OSC now. Unfortunately I have yet to hear anyone making very aggressive music. And the precision of HD sequencing has so much added value in aggressively organized compositions.
