Vanity – Occult You (CD Album – Church Independent)Posted on 18/09/13
Genre/Influences: Rock-wave, post-punk.
Content: It’s very hard to define the sound of Vanity. The band was set up by members from very different origins and cultures, which I think is easily recognizable in their sound. The Palestinian singer has been joined by a Swiss bass player and Italian drummer plus guitarist. This debut work was produced by Lorenzo Montana, who gained some recognition as producer of Tying Tiffany.
“Occult You” is lyrically inspired and based upon a never published novel of singer N and deals with elements of drama, tragedy, loneliness, fate and love. Musically, it starts off in a rather new-wave inspired way. The 80s for sure has been a main source of inspiration, but rapidly you also will notice other elements like doom, indie-rock and even a touch of grunge.
The grunge influence comes especially through on the final cut “The Wanderer” reminding me of Pearl Jam. I personally prefer their darker –doom style that you can hear on the cool “Ruins” and the heavier and 80s-like “Ghosts”.
Vanity is not exactly setting the world on fire, but their debut album is an honest piece of music revealing a mature production. I especially want to mention the remarkable production of the vocals, which also reveals a great singer.
Conclusion: “Occult You” is a very diversified album, which is nearly impossible to define as one established genre. This work rather sounds as the offspring between different influences.
Best songs: “Ghosts”, “Ruins”, “The Wanderer”.
