Love In Prague – Ghost Note (CD Album – Kalinkaland Records)Posted on 27/06/13
Genre/Influences: New-wave, gothic.
Content: After a few self-releases the French duo of Love In Prague signed to Kalinkaland Records. The German label didn’t release a lot of productions over the past few years, but when a new released comes out it often stands for a high qualitative level.
“Ghost Note” totally suits the label. This album will definitely appeal for fans of bands like Cocteau Twins, And Also The Trees and co. A few other songs also evoke some good-old souvenirs of The Danse Society. Love In Prague brings us back to the glorious decade of new-wave music and a legendary label like 4AD. The work is filled with this typically dark flavor of melancholia accompanied by some fragile male vocals. The guitar play smells like pure new-wave. The melancholia even turns into pure dark and depressive-minded music (cf. “Fog”), but in the end it was a very essential element of the new-wave movement. Love In Prague perfectly emulates this kind of spirit.
Songs like “Voices” and “Forgotten” are moving into the evasive style à la Cocteau Twins and the fascinating darkness of The Danse Society. Some sensual female chanting is noticeable on “Forgotten”, which injects a quite intriguing element to the song. It also reveals the maturity of this young formation that was set up in 2007. All of the songs move in between delicacy and refinement at one side and some state of sorrow and depression at the other side. The low bass lines are only accentuating the darkness recovering this album. Noticed by the way that Harald Löwy (Chandeen) has mixed this CD.
Conclusion: “Ghost Note” perfectly stands for the content of the album, but musically it’s a very successful release featuring numerous noticeable cuts.
Best songs: “Forgotten”, “Outro”, “Voices”, “Fog”.
